A sleeper sofa is the default answer to “someone is staying over and I do not have a spare room.” It is also the piece of furniture people most often measure wrong, because almost every listing tells you the closed dimensions and then goes quiet about the one that matters. A sofa that fits your living room perfectly can still be unusable if opening it leaves eleven inches between the mattress and your coffee table.

So every pick on this page publishes the same set of numbers: the folded footprint, the open footprint, how much extra depth the bed adds, the real sleep surface in inches, and the fold mechanism. Where a manufacturer does not state something, the spec block says so rather than guessing. The number that decides it is the depth gain, not the width

Everyone shops sleeper sofas by width, because width is what the room visually has or does not have. But a sofa sits against a wall, so width is rarely the constraint that bites. Depth is.
