Fold & Futon does not print prices — the reasoning is in how we choose what to recommend. What we can say is that the daybed is the cheapest route to a real, conventional, non-folding mattress on this site, and that the frames at the bottom of the market are more honest than the sofa beds at the bottom of theirs.

The catch, and it catches people: a daybed does not come with a mattress. Neither does the trundle. So the real budget is the frame plus one or two mattresses, and the mattresses are often more than the frame.

What the cheaper band reliably gives you

Powder-coated tube steel, metal or wood slats, no box spring needed, four castors on the trundle with two locking, self-assembly, and — usefully — published capacities. The Bushwick is 59 pounds of frame rated to 400 pounds with a 250-pound trundle. The Manila twin/twin is 400 and 225. The Bright Pop is 69.5 pounds, 400 and 250.

Those are real numbers on cheap furniture, and they are more informative than the equivalent band of convertible sofas, where open dimensions routinely go unpublished.

You also get, on the Bushwick specifically, a stated maximum mattress depth of 8 inches. That is the single most useful figure on any daybed listing and almost nobody else publishes it.

On a twin/twin trundle that is three purchases, not one. A Zinus eight-inch on top and a Linenspa six-inch below is the standard pairing and it works: the eight-inch has a real four-inch high-density base, and the six-inch is firm enough to survive a shallow tray.

If the budget only covers one mattress, buy the top one properly and leave the trundle empty until later. A good mattress on the bed that gets used beats two mediocre ones.

What suffers at this price, honestly

Noise. Tube steel frames with slats creak. Every one of them. Tightening the bolts after the first week and putting felt pads at the slat contact points is the only real mitigation.

Trundle capacity. 225 to 250 pounds is what the cheap band gives you, and it is the figure that most limits how the product can actually be used.

Documentation, on some models. The DHP Lina publishes a 450-pound capacity and no dimensions we could find on the listings available, which means you cannot plan a room around it. That is marked in its spec block rather than filled in.

Frame rigidity on wood. The Kayden at 225 pounds is the honest end of lightweight wood construction — 34 inches tall, wood slats, one person.

The two things worth spending more on

The mattress, first and by a wide margin. The frame holds a mattress off the floor. The mattress is what you sleep on. An eight-inch memory foam over a 400-pound tube frame sleeps better than a six-inch pad over a beautiful one.

A trundle rated for an adult, if you actually need one. That means the Manila queen/full at 450 pounds, which is a bigger frame and a bigger price. If the trundle is for a child, the cheap band is entirely adequate.

Do daybeds come with a mattress?
No, and neither does the trundle. Every frame here ships with slats and no mattress, so the real budget is the frame plus one or two mattresses — and the mattresses often cost more than the frame. If the budget only covers one, buy the top one properly.
Are cheap daybeds sturdy?
The published capacities are reasonable for the money — 400 pounds on a 59-pound Novogratz Bushwick frame, with a 250-pound trundle. What suffers is noise: powder-coated tube frames with slats creak, all of them, and tightening the bolts and adding felt pads at the slat contacts is the only real fix.
What is the cheapest way to get a real guest bed?
A twin daybed frame plus an 8-inch mattress. It is the only cheap route on this site to a conventional, non-folding mattress — every budget sofa bed and futon compromises the sleeping surface so the furniture can do a second job.
Should I buy a daybed or a futon on a tight budget?
A daybed if the room can accept a bed in it, because you get a real mattress with no fold seam. A futon if the room has to read as a living room — but then you are choosing appearance over the sleeping surface, and it is worth being clear that is the trade.
