The Best Queen Sleeper Sofas for Small Spaces

A queen sleeper in a small room is a depth problem, not a width problem. Most rooms that can take one cannot take it where you want to put it.

How we picked

This is a short list on purpose. A queen sleeping surface needs roughly 60 by 80 inches, and a sofa that produces one has to extend most of 80 inches from the wall — which is more depth than most small rooms have. We include only models whose listings state an open dimension, plus the replacement mattress that fixes the comfort of a pull-out you already own. Where a listing omits the closed depth we say so; the figure cannot be inferred.

PUREMIND Queen Sleeper Sofa (69 in. pull-out)

PUREMIND

A genuine pull-out rather than a fold-back: a 69-inch loveseat that pulls forward to 71.7 inches deep over a folding foam mattress.

What it's bad at

71.7 inches of depth when open is more than most small rooms have between the wall and the opposite furniture. Measure that gap before anything else.

The Brittany with a chaise bolted on: 88 inches of sofa that turns into an 88 by 66 inch sleeping platform without a pull-out mechanism.

What it's bad at

At 55.5 inches deep before you open it, this is a big piece of furniture. It eats more floor closed than most sleeper sofas do open, which defeats the point in a genuinely small room.

The fix for a pull-out you can feel the bar through: 4.5 inches of gel memory foam, 44 lb, and a 25-year warranty.

What it's bad at

A "queen" sofa bed mattress is 58 by 72 inches, not 60 by 80. Your queen sheets will not fit it, and nor will a standard queen mattress protector.

The arithmetic is unkind here and it is better to face it early. A queen mattress is 60 by 80 inches. A sofa that opens to a queen has to project almost the full 80 inches from the wall, and small-room listings confirm it: queen sleepers generally extend to about 85 to 90 inches of depth when open. Add a 30-inch walkway and you need roughly ten feet of clear floor measured out from the wall.

Plenty of rooms have ten feet in one direction. Far fewer have it in the direction the sofa needs it, once you account for the door swing and the TV. So this page does two things: it lists the models that genuinely produce a large sleeping surface, and it tells you when to stop and look at a wall bed instead, which gets you a real queen mattress using the same floor and gives it back in the morning.

A “queen” sofa bed is not a queen bed

Two different things get called queen in this category and neither is 60 by 80 inches.

A traditional pull-out marketed as queen takes a sofa-bed queen mattress, which is 58 by 72 inches. That is what the Classic Brands replacement mattress is: 58 inches wide, 72 inches long, 4.5 inches thick. Eight inches shorter than a bedroom queen and two inches narrower. Your queen sheets will be loose on it and your queen mattress protector will not fit at all.

A split-back sectional marketed as queen-width, like the Brittany Sectional, produces 88 by 66 inches — wider than a queen and shorter than one. It is a genuinely large surface and it is not a queen mattress, because it is upholstery foam with a seam rather than a mattress.

The only true queen in a small footprint

If you want an actual 60-by-80 queen mattress in a small room, the format that delivers it is a wall bed or a cabinet bed, not a sofa. The cabinet beds take a real queen mattress, are 25 to 26 inches deep closed, and need nothing drilled into the wall.

Run the depth numbers before you shop

Measure from the wall the sofa will sit against, straight out, to the nearest fixed obstruction. Not to the opposite wall — to the thing that is actually in the way, which is usually a coffee table, a media unit or the edge of a doorway.

What a queen sleeper needs, measured from the wall

PUREMIND queen pull-out
71.7 in. deep fully extended
Typical queen pull-out
roughly 85–90 in. deep open, per small-space listings
Walkway to add
30–36 in.
Total clear depth needed
roughly 102–126 in. (8 ft 6 in. to 10 ft 6 in.)

The PUREMIND is the interesting case: a 69-inch loveseat that pulls out to 71.7 inches deep. That is still six feet of projection, but it is meaningfully less than a full-size queen pull-out, and the closed width is small enough for a real apartment. Its listing does not state a closed depth, so you cannot calculate the gain — plan for the whole 71.7 inches.

If you already own a queen pull-out, replace the mattress

The single highest-value thing you can do in this category costs a fraction of a new sofa. Factory pull-out mattresses are thin, and the steel deck under them telegraphs through — that is the bar people feel. A 4.5-inch gel memory foam replacement absorbs enough of it to change the experience, folds into most standard fold-out frames, and weighs 44 pounds.

Check the frame size first: sofa-bed queen is 58 by 72 inches, sofa-bed full is narrower, and a replacement that is a little too large will stop the sofa closing. Sizes are set out in sleeper sofa mattress sizes, and there is more on the mechanics in how to make a sleeper sofa more comfortable.

When to stop looking for a queen sofa

If the wall you have gives you less than about eight and a half feet of clear depth, stop. You will either buy a sofa you cannot open properly or you will open it once, discover the problem, and never open it again — which is the outcome most of the regretful reviews in this category describe.

Two better routes. A queen wall bed extends about 93 inches from the wall but only when it is down, and it is 23 to 26 inches deep the rest of the time, so the floor is only committed while someone is asleep. Or accept a smaller surface: the widest split-backs on the main sleeper sofa page give you 81.5 by 44 inches with a nine-inch depth gain, which most rooms can absorb.

Answers

Common questions

What are the dimensions of a queen sleeper sofa mattress?
A sofa-bed queen mattress is 58 inches wide by 72 inches long — for example the Classic Brands 4.5-inch replacement, at 58 by 72 by 4.5 inches. A bedroom queen is 60 by 80 inches. They are not interchangeable, and queen sheets will be loose on a sofa-bed queen.
How much floor space does a queen sleeper sofa need when open?
Small-space retail listings put queen sleepers at roughly 85 to 90 inches of depth when opened. Add 30 to 36 inches of walkway and the real requirement is about eight and a half to ten and a half feet measured out from the wall. The PUREMIND loveseat-style pull-out is shallower at 71.7 inches extended.
Is there a queen sleeper sofa that fits a small apartment?
There are queen-width sofas that fit small apartments closed, and very few rooms that can open one properly. If you need a genuine 60 by 80 queen mattress in a small space, a wall bed or a cabinet bed is the format that delivers it — they are 23 to 26 inches deep when closed and only commit the floor while the bed is down.
Why can I feel the bar through my sofa bed mattress?
Because the factory mattress is usually two to four inches thick and sits directly on a steel support deck. A 4.5-inch gel memory foam replacement is thick enough to stop the frame telegraphing, still folds into a standard fold-out frame, and does not stop the sofa closing.
