Daybed vs Futon

One gives you a real mattress and never gets smaller. The other gives you a seam and folds away. That is the whole comparison.

A single bed with usable storage space underneath the frame

This is the most useful comparison on the site for anyone furnishing a spare room, because the two formats are close in price and completely different in what they give you.

A daybed takes a conventional, non-folding mattress at whatever depth the frame allows — no bi-fold, no seam, no cavity. It is also 41 inches deep permanently and it looks like a bed. A futon gives you a sofa that folds down, gains nine or ten inches of depth when it does, and puts a seam across the middle of the sleeping surface.

A daybed with an eight-inch memory foam mattress — two inches of memory foam, two of comfort foam, four of high-density base — is a bed. A convertible futon is a sofa lying down. That is not a marginal difference and anyone who has slept on both knows which is which.

The futon’s compensation is that it is a usable sofa the rest of the time, which a daybed genuinely is not without a bolster.

The floor: constant versus variable

A daybed is about 41 inches deep and stays that way. A Novogratz Brittany is 34.5 inches closed and 43.5 open.

So in a room you walk through constantly, the daybed is worse — it takes 41 inches out of the walkway all day. In a room where the bed is only in the way at night, the futon is worse, because you have to have the extra nine inches plus a walkway available anyway.

Pick a daybed if...

The room is a guest room, a home office or a spare room — somewhere a bed is allowed to look like a bed.

Someone sleeps there more than a handful of nights a month, so the mattress matters.

You want two beds in one footprint and you have read the trundle capacity (225 to 250 pounds on most frames, 450 on a Manila queen/full).

You want nothing that can fail. A daybed has no mechanism at all — it is the most reliable format on this site.

Pick a futon if...

The room has to read as a living room, which a daybed cannot do convincingly.

Guests are occasional, so the seam does not get tested.

You need the floor back during the day and a 41-inch-deep piece of furniture is not available to you.

You want the highest published weight capacity for the money — 600 pounds is common on split-backs.

The third answer

Common questions

Is a daybed or a futon better?
A daybed sleeps better — a conventional non-folding twin mattress with no fold seam — and it takes 41 inches of floor permanently. A futon is a usable sofa and puts a seam across the sleeping surface. Pick the daybed for a spare room, the futon for a room that has to read as a living room.
Is a daybed more comfortable than a futon?
Yes, meaningfully, because you are choosing the mattress rather than sleeping on upholstery. A daybed with an eight-inch memory foam mattress has no seam and no crossbar. A convertible futon is a sofa lying down, with a join where the seat meets the back.
Does a daybed take up more room than a futon?
Permanently, yes: about 41 inches of depth against a futon's 33 to 35 inches closed. In use the futon is only slightly deeper at 43 to 44 inches. The daybed's real footprint problem is a trundle, which needs roughly its own width of clear floor on top of the daybed's depth.
Can a daybed be used as a sofa?
With one firm bolster 16 to 20 inches deep running the full length of the back, yes — that reduces the effective seat depth from about 41 inches to something sittable. Scatter cushions do not work. Without a bolster you are perching on the front edge with no back support.
