If you already own a sofa bed and it is uncomfortable, replacing the mattress is the highest-value change available to you, and it costs a fraction of a new sofa. It is also the purchase people most often get wrong, for one specific reason: a sofa-bed mattress is not the same size as a bed mattress with the same name.

A sofa-bed queen is 58 by 72 inches. A bedroom queen is 60 by 80. Order the second and it will not fold into the cavity, and the sofa will not close. Every size in this class is set out in sleeper sofa mattress sizes — read that first if you have not measured your frame.

First, work out which kind of frame you have

Three frames take three different mattresses, and buying across them is the main failure mode.

A fold-out sofa hides its mattress inside a cavity, so depth is capped by the cavity, not by comfort. A futon frame bi-folds the mattress in the open, so it can take eight inches — which is why the DHP coil mattress is the most comfortable thing on this page and will not fit a pull-out.

How thick you can actually go

For a fold-out sofa, 4.5 inches is the practical ceiling and the Classic Brands gel memory foam replacement is built to it. That is enough to stop the support deck and its crossbar telegraphing, which is the whole point.

For a futon frame, eight inches with 15-gauge independently encased pocket coils is available and is a different class of sleeping surface. The cost is 59 pounds of mattress on a frame that has to fold, which is stiff for the first dozen folds.

For a trundle drawer, six inches or less — a trundle is a shallow tray and a thicker mattress stops it closing. Both six-inch options here fit that constraint.

Check this before you order

Fold the sofa out, measure the mattress currently in it, and measure the gap the mattress sits in when the sofa is closed. The second number is your real ceiling, and it is usually about half an inch less than the first.

Foam, coils, or both

Innerspring at six inches is the budget answer for a trundle or spare frame. Firm, cheap, and honestly a guest-frequency product rather than something to put an adult on five nights a week.

Tri-fold memory foam is not really a sofa mattress at all — it is a closet-stored guest bed. Included here because it is what people should buy when the answer is “do not fix the sofa, add a separate bed.”

Then solve the bedding, because your sheets will not fit

A 58-by-72-inch surface has no fitted sheet made for it. Queen sheets are loose and usable; full sheets are too short. Most people end up with a flat sheet tucked, or a fitted full sheet that pulls at the corners.

Mattress protectors are worse — there is no sofa-bed-queen protector in general retail, and a standard queen protector bunches enough to be felt. If the surface needs protecting, a flat waterproof pad under the sheet is the practical answer.
