Every other page on this site assumes the guest bed is somewhere you do not spend your evenings. A studio inverts that. The futon is the sofa you sit on to eat, work and watch things, and it is a bed occasionally. So the ranking flips: seat comfort first, sleep surface second.

The second thing a studio changes is sight lines. There is nowhere to put an unfolded bed out of view, so how the thing looks in its open state is a genuine quality-of-life question rather than a detail. A split-back that folds down in two neat halves reads as a daybed; a half-open pull-out reads as a building site.

Seat depth and seat height, not sleep surface

The two numbers that decide whether you can sit on something all evening are seat depth and seat height, and almost nobody in this category publishes them. The Serta Rane does: 19.8-inch seat depth, 15-inch seat height. The Serta Chelsea publishes a 7.1-inch seat cushion and a 5.1-inch back cushion. Best Choice Products publishes a 19-inch seat depth and 15.5-inch seat height on its faux leather model.

A 15-inch seat height is low. Standard dining chairs are about 18 inches and standard sofas about 17 to 19. Low is comfortable to lounge on and harder to get out of, and if anyone in the household has a knee problem it is the deciding number.

Overall height matters too, for a different reason: at 29 inches the Best Choice Products linen model gives a tall person no shoulder support at all. The Chelsea and Rane are 29.5; the Brittany and Tallulah are 31.5 and 32.5.

Designing a studio around one piece of furniture

Three moves make a studio futon work, and none of them is about the futon.

Put it perpendicular to the longest wall, not against it. A futon used as a room divider gives the bed area a boundary and stops the open state feeling like the bed has taken over.

Make the coffee table move. Nesting tables or castors. The coffee table is what blocks the open bed in almost every studio, and it is a $60 problem masquerading as a furniture problem.

Store the bedding within reach of the futon. A studio has no linen closet. If the duvet lives across the room, the futon does not get opened. An under-futon storage box is the common answer, or a trundle-style drawer if you switch format.

The honest alternative in a studio: a wall bed

If you are the person sleeping there every night — not a guest — a futon is the wrong answer and a wall bed is the right one. You sleep on a real 8-to-12-inch queen mattress and the floor comes back every morning, which is the entire point of a studio layout.

What wears out when a sofa bed is used daily

Daily sitting compresses the seat where you sit, which on a split-back is also the sleeping surface. Expect a visible dip within a year or two on a foam model, sooner if you always sit in the same spot. Memory foam over high-density foam, as on the Tallulah, holds its shape longer than plain foam.

The other daily-use casualty is the fabric. Linen weave in a studio, where you eat on the sofa, will show it. Faux leather wipes and looks worse doing it. Velvet marks and shows every pet hair. There is no good answer; pick which failure you mind least.
