Everything that decides how a futon sleeps is on this page rather than on the frame pages. A frame is a hinge and some slats. The mattress is what your hip lands on at two in the morning.

Two things to get right before construction or brand. First, the fold: bi-fold, tri-fold, roll-up or none, because a tri-fold mattress on a bi-fold frame sits with a ridge across it and a bi-fold mattress will not fold into a tri-fold frame at all. Second, the size: a full futon mattress is 75 by 54 inches, the same as a standard full in plan, and it is not interchangeable with a sofa-bed mattress or a bedroom mattress.

A bi-fold is the normal futon frame arrangement: the mattress hinges once in the middle and the frame carries it as a sofa back and seat. That single fold is why eight inches is achievable here and nowhere else in this category.

A tri-fold has two fold lines and is designed to stand upright in a closet or to sit inside a cabinet bed — the Night & Day Cube and the Arason Creden-ZzZ both use tri-fold mattresses. Those two lines are findable through the foam if you sleep on your side, which is the honest cost of the format.

Coils, memory foam, or cotton batting

Independently encased pocket coils are the best futon mattress construction available and the DHP eight-inch is the example: 15-gauge coils with foam and polyester layering, CertiPUR-US certified foam, 59 pounds. Coils fold better than people expect because each one is in its own pocket.

Memory foam over a support base is the second option and the more common one. The Zinus eight-inch runs two inches of memory foam, two of airflow comfort foam and four of high-density base. It does not fold — it belongs on a non-folding frame — but where that is available it is the best value on this page.

Cotton batting over foam is what a traditional Japanese shikibuton is, and the MAXYOYO is the modern version: microfiber cotton over high-density foam, four inches, 10 to 14.5 pounds depending on size. Firm in a way that suits back sleepers and punishes side sleepers.

Three of those six are traps. A sofa-bed queen is eight inches shorter than a bedroom queen. A cot-size tri-fold is seven inches narrower than a twin. And a cabinet bed sold as queen can hide a 53-by-75-inch mattress, which is nearer a full.

If someone sleeps on it every night

Eight inches, coils, and a frame that supports the whole area rather than four slats. A six-inch pad used nightly compresses to something thinner within months, and the compression happens where the weight is, which is the worst possible place.

What size is a full futon mattress?
75 by 54 inches, which is the same plan as a standard full mattress, with depth ranging from six to eight inches. That is why full sheets fit a full futon mattress and why a twin mattress does not fit a full futon frame.
What is the best futon mattress thickness?
Eight inches on a bi-fold frame, which is the practical ceiling for a mattress that folds once. Six inches for a tri-fold and about four for a roll-up floor futon. Below six inches most adults feel the frame or the floor within a couple of nights.
Can you use a regular mattress on a futon frame?
