Futon Mattress Sizes

Twin, full and queen mean one thing on a bedroom mattress and three different things once a mattress has to fold. Buying the wrong one of the three is the most common mistake in this category.

The short answer

A bifold futon mattress for a futon frame is sized like a standard mattress: a full is 54 x 75 in. A Japanese floor futon is 80 in. long in every width, so its full is 54 x 80 - five inches longer. A sofa-bed replacement mattress is smaller than both: the sofa-bed queen is 58 x 72 in., not 60 x 80. Measure the frame or the sofa deck, not the mattress you already own, and match the system before you match the size name.

A folded foam mattress standing upright against a wall on a bare floor

There are three size systems wearing the same four words. A bifold futon mattress follows standard mattress sizing, so its full is 54 by 75 inches. A Japanese floor futon is 80 inches long in every width, so its full is 54 by 80. A sleeper-sofa replacement mattress is smaller than either: the size sold as a sofa-bed queen measures 58 by 72 inches.

That is the entire reason this page exists. “Full” tells you almost nothing on its own, and every one of those three products is legitimately labeled and legitimately sold. The mistake is not the manufacturer’s; it is assuming the word means what it meant on your last mattress.

Below is every published size we can source, grouped by system, with the figure that actually decides the purchase in each case. If what you want to know is how thick the mattress should be rather than how long, that is a different question with a different answer and it is in how thick a futon mattress should be.

The three systems, side by side

Published dimensions by size name, across the three systems

Standard mattress — Twin
39 × 75 in. (Linenspa 6 in. innerspring)
Standard mattress — Twin XL
39 × 80 in.
Standard mattress — Full
54 × 75 in.
Standard mattress — Queen
60 × 80 in.
Bifold futon mattress — Full
75 × 54 in. (DHP 8 in. pocket coil)
Floor futon — Twin
39 × 80 in. (MAXYOYO)
Floor futon — Full
54 × 80 in.
Floor futon — Queen
60 × 80 in.
Floor futon — King
78 × 80 in.
Sofa-bed mattress — Queen
58 × 72 × 4.5 in. (Classic Brands Cool Gel)

Three things fall out of that table immediately.

The bifold futon mattress is the well-behaved one. The DHP 8-inch pocket coil full is 75 by 54 inches, which is a standard full to the inch. If your futon frame was built for a full futon mattress, standard full sizing is what you are shopping for, and your existing full sheets will fit.

The floor futon is five inches longer than you expect. MAXYOYO’s whole range runs 80 inches long — twin, full, queen and king alike. A floor-futon full is 54 by 80, not 54 by 75. That extra five inches is good news for anyone over 5 ft 10 in and bad news for a fitted sheet bought for a full bed, which will be five inches short.

The sofa-bed mattress is smaller than everything. Fifty-eight by seventy-two inches is two inches narrower and eight inches shorter than a bedroom queen. It is not a defective queen; it is the size sleeper-sofa decks are built to, because the mattress has to fold into the sofa body. The full story on that system is in sleeper sofa mattress sizes.

What fits a futon frame

A futon frame is built around one mattress size and will not take another. Full is the common one in the United States, twin is the dorm and chair-bed size, and queen frames exist but are much rarer. The frame decides; the mattress follows.

The second constraint is depth, and it is the one that catches people who have correctly matched the length and width. A bifold frame has to close around the mattress, and eight inches of pocket-coil mattress is a genuinely stiff fold — the DHP full weighs 59 lb. Several frames in adjacent categories publish a hard ceiling: the Novogratz Bushwick daybed states a maximum of 8 inches, as does the Dream Solutions pop-up trundle, where exceeding it means the two sleeping surfaces no longer sit level.

The third is the carton, which almost nobody checks. The DHP full ships rolled in a carton measuring 59 by 13 by 13 inches. That is a long box to get up a stairwell, and it is the only dimension that matters on delivery day.

The sheet problem, since nobody warns you about it

Match the sheet to the mattress system, not to the word on the box. A bifold full takes standard full sheets. A floor-futon full needs full sheets with deep enough length for 80 inches, or twin XL sheets if the futon is a twin. A sofa-bed queen at 58 by 72 will swim in queen sheets and work better with a full fitted sheet.

Floor futons are sized as bedding, not as furniture

A Japanese floor futon — a shikibuton — is not sized to a frame, because there is no frame. It is sized to a sleeper and to the floor, which is why the whole range is 80 inches long regardless of width. MAXYOYO publishes twin at 39 by 80, full at 54 by 80, queen at 60 by 80 and king at 78 by 80.

The variable that moves in this category is thickness rather than footprint. MAXYOYO sells the same mattress in 4, 4.5, 6 and 8 inch versions, and the gap between the 4-inch and the 8-inch is the difference between a floor you can feel and a bed. Four inches on tile or laminate is four inches, and the manufacturer’s own framing is that side sleepers and heavier adults will feel the floor through it.

So the sizing decision in this system is two-dimensional: pick the width from the sleeper, pick the thickness from the floor and the sleeper’s weight. The field is covered in the best Japanese floor futons, and the position-specific version of the thickness question is in the best futons for side sleepers.

Tri-fold mattresses use a fourth set of names

Folding foam mattresses — the kind that stand in a closet in three layers — publish their own size names, and two of them do not exist anywhere else in bedding. Milliard’s 6-inch tri-fold is sold as Single at 75 by 25 inches, Cot at 75 by 31, Twin XL at 78 by 38, Full at 75 by 52 and Queen at 78 by 58.

Read those against the first table and the pattern is clear: a tri-fold “full” is two inches narrower than a standard full, and a tri-fold “queen” is two inches narrower and two inches longer. Single and Cot are narrower than any standard mattress size — 25 and 31 inches against a twin’s 39 — which makes them a floor-sleeping or camp-cot format rather than a bed one.

Why this one is a reference and not a recommendation

We are quoting Milliard’s size chart because it is the clearest published example of tri-fold naming, not as a buying suggestion: every size on the brand listing showed as sold out or unavailable when we checked it on 7 October 2026. Sizes are facts about the format; availability is a fact about today.

How to get the size right in four measurements

One: measure the deck, not the old mattress. On a futon frame, measure the slatted platform corner to corner with the frame flat. On a sleeper sofa, pull the deck out and measure the metal frame the mattress sits in. Old mattresses compress and shrink at the edges, so measuring the thing you are replacing is how people buy one size too small.

Two: find the frame’s stated maximum depth. If the manufacturer publishes one, it is a ceiling and not a suggestion, especially on anything that has to fold or rise level with another surface.

Three: identify the system before the size. Bifold futon, floor futon, tri-fold or sofa-bed replacement. Four products can all say “full” and no two of them share both dimensions.

Four: check the carton against the route in. A rolled full futon mattress ships in a box around five feet long. Measure the tightest turn on the stairs.

If this is a replacement for a sleeper sofa rather than a futon frame, the dedicated page is the best sleeper sofa replacement mattresses. If it is for a daybed or a trundle, the depth ceilings matter more than the width and the page for that is what size mattress for a daybed. And if you have not bought the frame yet, the mattress-first way round is in the best futon mattresses.

How we picked

This is a reference page rather than a ranking, so the picks are simply the mattresses the headline figures belong to: the bifold full, the floor futon that runs 80 inches long in every width, the standard innerspring that sets the baseline, and the sofa-bed replacement that is smaller than all of them. Every dimension below is quoted from the manufacturer's own published size chart, re-checked on 7 October 2026. Where a maker publishes nothing for a size we leave the cell empty rather than filling it from a competitor.

Answers

Common questions

What size is a full futon mattress?
It depends which kind of futon. A bifold futon mattress for a futon frame follows standard mattress sizing, so a full is 54 by 75 inches - the DHP 8-inch pocket coil full is exactly 75 by 54. A Japanese floor futon is 80 inches long in every width, so a floor-futon full is 54 by 80 inches, five inches longer.
Are futon mattresses the same size as regular mattresses?
Bifold futon mattresses are, which is why standard full sheets fit them. Floor futons are not - they run 80 inches long in every width, including the twin and the full. Tri-fold folding mattresses use their own chart again, with a full at 54 by 75 shrinking to about 52 inches of width and sizes called Single and Cot that are narrower than any standard mattress.
Is a sofa-bed queen the same as a regular queen?
No, and this is the single most expensive assumption in the category. A sofa-bed queen replacement mattress measures 58 by 72 by 4.5 inches against a bedroom queen's 60 by 80. It is two inches narrower and eight inches shorter, because the mattress has to fold down into the sofa body. Queen sheets will be loose on it.
What size futon mattress fits my futon frame?
Whatever size the frame was built for - full in most American futon frames, twin in dorm and chair-bed frames, queen only on the rarer wide frames. Measure the slatted platform corner to corner with the frame laid flat rather than measuring the mattress you are replacing, because old mattresses shrink at the edges and that is how buyers end up one size too small.
Does a thicker futon mattress still fit the frame?
Only up to the frame's stated maximum. Several frames in adjacent categories publish a hard ceiling - the Novogratz Bushwick daybed states 8 inches, as does the Dream Solutions pop-up trundle, where going over it means the trundle no longer rises level with the daybed. An 8-inch pocket-coil full is also a stiff fold and weighs 59 lb, which a light tube-steel frame will feel.
What sheets fit a futon mattress?
Match the system, not the word on the box. A bifold full takes standard full sheets. A floor-futon full is 80 inches long, so it needs a full sheet deep enough for that length, and a floor-futon twin works with twin XL sheets. A 58-by-72 sofa-bed queen fits a full fitted sheet better than a queen one.
