How to Measure for a Sleeper Sofa

1. Clear depth: wall to the nearest fixed obstruction

Stand at the wall the furniture will sit against and measure straight out — not to the opposite wall, but to the first thing that is genuinely in the way. Usually a coffee table, a media unit, a radiator or the swing of a door.

This is the number that eliminates products. Compare it against the open depth in the spec block plus 30 inches of walkway:

Thirty inches is the floor, not the ideal. The ADA accessible-route standard sets 36 inches as the minimum clear width for a route, and Bestar independently recommends 30 to 36 inches of clear movement space around an open bed. If the route is walked at night, use 36.

2. Wall run: the uninterrupted length

Measure the clear wall at the height the furniture will occupy, not at floor level. Baseboards, radiator covers and skirting all shrink the usable run, and so does a light switch you will not want covered.

Then subtract a foot at each end if you want the piece to look placed rather than wedged. A nine-foot wall gives you roughly 84 usable inches, which is most of this category but not the sectionals.

This measurement is what rules a horizontal wall bed in or out — they need 84 inches of clear wall — and it is what rules out a Brittany Sectional, which is 88 inches wide before you open it.

3. Ceiling height at the wall, to the lowest obstruction

Only matters for wall beds, and it matters absolutely. Measure at the wall, and measure to the lowest thing above that position: a crown molding, a bulkhead, a sprinkler head, a ceiling fan blade at its lowest.

That three-inch spread between models is the difference between a shortlist and none. And cabinet beds — 36 to 39 inches tall — have no ceiling requirement at all.

4. The delivery route: narrowest point, not the room door

Walk the route the furniture will take and measure the narrowest point. That is almost never the room door: it is the building entrance, a stairwell turn, or the diagonal across a landing.

Standard residential interior doors are usually 30 or 32 inches, and dorm doorways run 30 to 32 as well. None of the manufacturers in this category publishes a doorway minimum — the spec blocks on this site say so rather than guessing — so what you can check is the shipping carton dimensions, which are on the delivery tab rather than the product page.

For a stairwell turn, measure the diagonal of the space at the turn, and remember the carton has to pivot within it. A 59-by-13-by-13-inch mattress carton pivots anywhere; a 46-by-37-by-17-inch sofa carton does not.

5. Assembled weight, against your stairs

Not a room measurement, and it belongs in the same list because it determines whether the furniture arrives at all.

Under 70 pounds is one determined person. 70 to 90 is two people. Over 90 is two people and a plan for the turn. Over 150 — which is where cabinet beds live, at 170 to 250 pounds assembled and not disassemblable — is a delivery service and a ground floor or a lift.

Ask whether the delivery is threshold or room-of-choice before ordering anything over about 100 pounds. Threshold means the pavement.

6. The sleep surface you actually need

Measure the person, not the sofa. Anyone over about 5 ft 10 in has their feet over the edge of a 70-inch surface, and most convertible sofas open to 70 to 73 inches on their long dimension — the exception being the Vintage Tufted Sofa Sleeper II, which keeps its full 81.5 inches.

Then check what bedding exists. Nothing is made for 70.5 by 43.5 inches. A sofa-bed queen at 58 by 72 inches takes loose queen sheets. A daybed takes ordinary twin sheets, and a floor futon takes real mattress sizes. Sizes are set out in sleeper sofa mattress sizes.

What to do with the six numbers

Take them to which guest bed is right for your room, which sorts the four formats by exactly these constraints.

If clear depth is under about six feet, you want the shallowest convertible on the apartment-size page. If the ceiling clears 89 inches and the lease allows it, you want a wall bed. If the room fails everything, a closet-stored mattress fails nothing, because it has no footprint when it is away.
