How we picked

The bar is deliberately high and the list is deliberately short. To qualify a mattress needs eight inches of depth and a support structure that is either encased coils or a dedicated high-density base — because those are the two things that resist the permanent compression nightly use causes. This page exists because the honest answer to “can I sleep on a futon every night?” is “on three of them, yes, and on most of them no,” and almost nobody says the second half.

What nightly use does to a futon mattress is compress it permanently, and it compresses it where your hips are. A six-inch foam pad used every night is a four-inch pad within months and a three-inch pad where it matters. Two things resist that: encased coils, because each coil recovers independently, and a thick high-density base layer, because compression happens in the comfort layers first.

Eight inches is not arbitrary. It is the depth at which a mattress has room for a genuine support layer under the comfort layer, and the point at which the frame or the floor stops being a factor for most body weights.

The Tallulah is the outlier: it is a convertible sofa rather than a mattress, and it is here because among convertibles it is the only one whose listing specifies memory foam over high-density foam rather than just “foam.” It still has a fold seam, which is the reason it ranks third.

What fails under nightly use, and how fast

Six-inch foam pads. Visible dip within six to twelve months of nightly use. The failure is in the comfort layer and it is permanent.

Tri-folds. The two fold lines become the two places the foam creases, and creased foam does not recover. A tri-fold is a closet product and it is excellent at that job.

Four-inch floor futons. Not a nightly product for most adults at all — a MAXYOYO is four inches of quilted cotton over foam, which is firm support on a floor rather than a mattress. The traditional use pattern involves airing it daily, which most people do not do.

Convertible sofa upholstery. Compresses where you sit, which on a split-back is also where you sleep. This is the fastest failure of the group in a studio where the sofa gets daily sitting as well as nightly sleeping.

The threshold we use across the site

Above roughly six to eight nights a month, buy eight inches with coils or a high-density base. Above roughly twenty nights a month, buy a bed — a cabinet bed takes a real 8-to-12-inch queen mattress and needs nothing drilled.

The frame matters more at this depth, not less

An eight-inch mattress on four widely spaced slats sags between the slats and the mattress takes the shape. Look for a frame that either has close slats or a solid deck, and check the frame’s own stated maximum mattress depth — the Novogratz Bushwick daybed, for example, publishes an 8-inch maximum, which tells you what the frame expects.

Weight is the other frame consideration. 59 pounds of coil mattress on a bi-fold frame means the frame carries that load through its hinge every time you fold it. Metal frames handle it better than the cheaper particleboard-jointed wooden ones.

If the frame does not need to fold — a guest room, an office with a corner to spare — use a non-folding mattress on a daybed or platform. That is the best sleeping surface available in this price range, and it is covered in daybed mattresses.

When to stop buying futon mattresses

If the person sleeping there is doing it most nights and it is their actual bed, buy them a bed. We would rather lose the sale than tell you a futon is fine for that.

On an eight-inch mattress with encased coils or a thick high-density base, yes. On a six-inch foam pad, not for long — nightly use compresses foam permanently and it compresses it where your hips are, so a six-inch pad becomes a four-inch pad within six to twelve months.
How long does a futon mattress last with daily use?
A six-inch foam pad shows a visible dip within six to twelve months of nightly use. An eight-inch encased-coil mattress lasts substantially longer because each coil recovers independently rather than the foam taking a set. Frame support matters too: widely spaced slats let the mattress sag into the gaps.
Is a futon bad for your back?
A thin one used nightly can be, because once the comfort layer compresses you are effectively sleeping on the support surface. A firm eight-inch mattress on a well-supported frame is not intrinsically worse than a bed. The variable is depth and support, not the word futon.
What is the best futon mattress for a heavy person?
Encased coils at eight inches, and check the frame rating rather than the mattress.
