Which Guest Bed Is Right for Your Room?

Four form factors, one decision, and it is almost always made by the floor rather than by taste. Here is the comparison with the actual numbers in it.

This is the page the rest of the site routes through. If you know someone needs somewhere to sleep and you have not decided what to buy, start here — the choice between a daybed, a futon, a sleeper sofa and a wall bed is decided by four measurements and two facts about your lease, and it is much less about preference than it appears.

The four measurements: the clear depth from the wall to the nearest fixed obstruction, the run of uninterrupted wall, the ceiling height at that wall, and the narrowest doorway on the delivery route. The two facts: whether you can put screws in the wall, and how many nights a month someone actually sleeps there.

The four formats, side by side

What each format costs in floor, and what it gives you to sleep on

Read that table twice, because it contains the counterintuitive finding. The wall bed has the smallest permanent footprint of the four — 23 inches — and the largest temporary one. The daybed has the largest permanent footprint and no temporary one at all. The sofa is in between on both.

So the real question is not “which is smaller.” It is “do I need the floor during the day, or the wall?”

Then decide by how many nights a month

One to six nights a month. A sleeper sofa or futon. The sleeping surface is a compromise and for a handful of nights it does not matter, and you get a sofa for the rest of the month. The small-space sleeper sofas are ranked on depth gain.

Six to twenty nights a month. A daybed with an 8-inch mattress, or a futon frame with an 8-inch pocket-coil mattress. Both give you a real sleeping surface, and both are honest about being a bed. See daybeds for guest rooms.

More than twenty nights, or it is your own bed. A wall bed or a cabinet bed. A conventional 8-to-12-inch mattress, and the floor comes back every morning. This is the right answer and it is worth the install. Wall beds.

The threshold, stated plainly

Roughly six to eight nights a month is where a folding surface stops being adequate. Above that, buy a real mattress. We would rather say that than sell you a convertible sofa for a job it does badly.

The three things that rule options out

Ceiling height under about 7 ft 5 in. That rules out a vertical wall bed: a Bestar Cielo needs 88.9 inches, a Versatile 92. A horizontal wall bed at 64 inches tall is the workaround, and it needs 84 inches of clear wall instead.

A lease that forbids fixings. That rules out every wall bed. It does not rule out a cabinet bed, which is freestanding — an Arason Creden-ZzZ listing states explicitly that it needs no bolting to floor or wall. What a lease actually says.

A narrow doorway or an awkward stairwell. That rules out cabinet beds, which are 170 to 250 pounds assembled and do not come apart, and it makes the heavier split-back sofas (100 to 110 pounds) a two-person job. It rules out almost nothing else.

If the room has to read as a living room

Then the honest shortlist is one item long: a convertible sofa. A daybed always looks like a bed, a cabinet bed provides no seating, and a wall bed is a wall of cabinetry.

Within convertible sofas, pick by depth gain. A Serta Rane goes 33.1 to 37.6 inches — 4.5 inches. A Novogratz Brittany goes 34.5 to 43.5 — nine inches. A Novogratz Tallulah goes 33.5 to 44 — ten and a half, and it has the best mattress construction of the three.

The one configuration that gives a real sofa and a real queen is a wall bed with a sofa in front of it. It needs 91.1 inches of ceiling, so check that first.

The number everyone forgets: the walkway

Whatever you buy, the open footprint is not the space requirement. You have to be able to walk past it, and in the dark.

We use 30 to 36 inches across this whole site. The upper figure comes from the ADA accessible-route standard, which sets 36 inches as the minimum clear width for a route; Bestar independently recommends 30 to 36 inches of clear movement space around an open wall bed. Thirty inches is about the narrowest gap an adult gets through comfortably.

So: open depth plus 30 inches. A Brittany at 43.5 inches open wants about 74 inches. A Cielo at 93.1 inches wants about 123. A trundle daybed at 81.5 inches of combined depth wants about 112.

How we picked

One representative from each format, chosen as the best-documented example rather than the cheapest or the most expensive: a wall bed, a convertible sofa, a daybed and a cabinet bed. The point of the list is to make the four formats concrete, not to rank across categories — comparing a $2,000 wall bed against a $300 futon on a single score would be meaningless.

Dual-mount means it anchors to both the floor and the wall. That is why it is stable, and it is also why most leases make it a conversation with the landlord.

Common questions

What is the best guest bed for a small space?
It depends on whether you need the floor during the day or the wall. A wall bed has the smallest permanent footprint of any format at 23 to 23.5 inches deep closed, and the largest temporary one at 86 to 93 inches when down. A daybed occupies 41 inches permanently and never more. A convertible sofa sits between the two on both counts.
Is a daybed or a sofa bed better for guests?
A daybed, if the room can accept a bed in it. It takes a conventional non-folding twin mattress, has no mechanism, and is already made up. A sofa bed wins only when the room has to read as a living room — and then you are choosing appearance over the sleeping surface.
How many nights a month justifies a Murphy bed?
Roughly twenty, or if it is your own everyday bed. Below about six to eight nights a month a folding surface is adequate and a wall bed's cost and installation are hard to justify. Between the two, a daybed or a futon frame with an eight-inch mattress is the proportionate answer.
What ceiling height do you need for each format?
Only wall beds care. A vertical queen wall bed needs about 89 to 92 inches — 88.9 for a Bestar Cielo, 92 for a Versatile. A horizontal wall bed is 64 inches tall closed and clears almost any ceiling. Cabinet beds, daybeds, futons and sofa beds have no ceiling requirement at all.
Which guest bed works in a rental?
All of them except a wall bed. A cabinet bed is the closest thing to a wall bed that a renter can have — freestanding, nothing bolted, a real mattress. A Lori-style panel bed sits in between: it must be anchored to studs, which is a screws-and-filler conversation rather than a floor-fixing one.
