A dorm room is roughly 130 square feet shared by two people, and it already contains two beds, two desks and two wardrobes before you add anything. The useful figures are not about sleeping. They are: how wide is the carton, how heavy is the thing, and can one person assemble it without a toolbox.

Doorways are the binding constraint and the one nobody checks. Dorm doorways commonly run 30 to 32 inches, the same as standard residential interior doors, and none of the manufacturers in this category publishes a doorway minimum — the spec blocks below say so rather than guessing. What you can do is check the shipping carton dimensions, which are usually on the delivery tab rather than the product page.

The three logistics numbers

Weight. The Best Choice Products faux leather model is 63 pounds assembled and their linen model 61.5 — genuinely a one-person carry with a rest halfway. Split-backs from Novogratz and DHP run 88 to 103.5 pounds, which is two people and a plan.

Closed width. Under 67 inches leaves room for a desk on the same wall. The Rane is 66.1 and both Best Choice Products convertibles are 65.25. Anything at 76 inches or more is taking a whole wall.

Assembly. Novogratz and DHP split-backs attach their legs by hand, no tools. The Best Choice Products models do require assembly. A tri-fold mattress or a floor futon requires none at all and arrives compressed.

What to measure before you order

The narrowest point on the route in: the building door, the stairwell turn, and the room door. Not the room. Every year’s worth of complaints in this category is about the stairwell turn.

The option most students should take: no furniture at all

A tri-fold foam mattress or a roll-up floor futon solves the dorm guest-bed problem better than a sofa does, and it is the answer we would give a first-year.

A Milliard tri-fold is 75 by 31 inches flat and folds to 31 by 25 by 18 inches — it stands in a wardrobe. A MAXYOYO twin floor futon is 39 by 80 inches, four inches thick, and weighs 10 pounds. Neither needs assembly, neither needs to fit through a door assembled, and in May both go home in a car rather than to a dumpster.

The compromise is real and worth stating: four to six inches on a hard floor is four to six inches. It is a friend-crashing solution, not a nightly bed. Detail in Japanese floor futons.

Check the housing rules before you buy anything

Most university housing contracts restrict upholstered furniture, and a fair number prohibit it outright on fire-code grounds. Some specify that any added furniture must meet a flammability standard; some cap the number of items per room.

Two things to look for on a listing: whether the foam is described as meeting a flammability standard, and whether flame retardants are named. The DHP futon mattress, for instance, states foam made without PBDEs, TDCPP or TCEP and low VOC emissions under 0.5 parts per million — which is an environmental claim rather than a fire-code one, and worth not confusing.

Nothing on this page can tell you your own housing rules. Read them, because a futon confiscated in week two is the most expensive outcome available.

Plan the exit in August, not in May

The reason dumpsters outside dorms fill with futons every spring is that nobody bought with the exit in mind. Two questions at purchase: does it come apart again, and will it fit in a car.

Split-backs with tool-free legs come apart to a panel and a frame, which fits most hatchbacks. Models that require assembly usually do not come apart cleanly once the particleboard fixings have been through one cycle. Tri-folds and floor futons fit in anything.

If the futon is staying in the room for four years, the calculus changes and a 600-pound-rated split-back is worth the extra weight. If it is a one-year purchase, buy light.
