Fold & Futon does not print prices. Pricing in this category changes weekly, a stale number is worse than no number, and every buy link here goes to the current one — the reasoning is set out in how we choose what to recommend. What we can do is describe the band honestly, because the sub-$1,000 segment has a very consistent specification profile and a very consistent set of omissions.

What it reliably gives you: a wood frame, foam fill, a split-back mechanism with no moving parts to fail, a published capacity between 400 and 600 pounds, and a flat-pack you assemble with the legs and nothing else. What it reliably does not give you: a mattress, a standard sleep size, a stated doorway minimum, or in several cases a stated open dimension at all.

What the band consistently buys you

The mechanism is the good news. Split-back convertibles have no steel bed frame, no sliding rails and no springs. The back drops in two halves and that is the whole mechanism, which is why DHP and Novogratz can publish 600-pound ratings on furniture that costs a fraction of a traditional sofa bed. There is very little in one of these to break.

The frames are real wood rather than molded plastic, and the Serta models here specify solid hardwood with chrome metal legs. Capacities in this group run 400 pounds (Rane), 500 pounds (Best Choice Products convertibles), 550 pounds (their split-back three-seater) and 600 pounds (Emily, Brittany).

Assembly is genuinely trivial on most of them. The Novogratz and DHP models attach their legs by hand with no tools. The Best Choice Products models do require assembly, and at 61.5 to 97 pounds the heavier one is a two-person job.

What the price is leaving out

The mattress. There isn’t one. You are sleeping on the seat and back upholstery, folded flat, with a seam where they meet. No topper fixes a seam, because the seam is a structural join rather than a padding deficit. The Tallulah, which uses memory foam over high-density foam, is as close as this band gets to addressing it.

The size. Nothing here opens to a standard mattress size. See sleeper sofa mattress sizes for what that means for bedding.

The documentation. This is the one that costs people money. Best Choice Products publishes closed dimensions and capacity but not open dimensions or sleep surface; the split-back three-seater has no published dimensions at all on the listings we could read. Serta does not publish a weight limit for the Chelsea. None of the manufacturers in this band publishes a doorway minimum. Every one of those gaps is marked in the spec blocks rather than filled in.

Why we will not estimate the missing numbers

A guessed open depth is worse than a blank, because a blank makes you go and measure and a guess makes you confident. If a figure is not in the listing, it is not on this site.

Where the extra money actually helps

Within this band, the upgrades that change the experience are, in order: a thicker or memory-foam seat, a longer open surface, and a documented listing.

The Chelsea’s 7.1-inch seat cushion is a real improvement over a thin foam pad for sitting. The Emily’s 71-by-43.5-inch open surface is a real improvement over the Rane’s 66-by-37.6 for sleeping. Neither of those is a big jump in price; both are a big jump in how the thing feels in use.

Above this band, what you start buying is a genuine mattress — either a pull-out with a real folding mattress, or a futon frame with an eight-inch pocket-coil futon mattress on it, which is the cheapest route to something that is actually comfortable for repeated nights.

If this band is still too much

A metal futon frame with a separate mattress is the cheapest full-size solution and it is covered in the best futons under $300. A tri-fold foam mattress that lives in a closet is cheaper again, needs no frame at all, and is the only option here with zero footprint when not in use — see Japanese floor futons.

Both involve visible compromises. Both are better than a sofa bed you bought because it was cheap and now do not open because it does not fit.

Why do you not show prices?

Because we have no live price feed for this site yet, and a printed price goes stale within weeks. A stale number is worse than no number: it makes you think you know what something costs. Every product links straight to the current price at the retailer. Yawnder, the most specialized futon publisher we found, takes the same position for the same reason.

Are sub-$1,000 sleeper sofas any good?

The mechanism is good — a split-back has almost nothing in it to fail, and published capacities of 500 to 600 pounds are normal in this band. The sleep surface is the compromise: it is upholstery foam with a seam across it, not a mattress, and no topper fixes a seam. For occasional guests that is a fair trade; for nightly sleeping it is not.

What is the best budget sleeper sofa for everyday use?

None of them, honestly. If someone is sleeping there most nights, a futon frame with an eight-inch pocket-coil mattress costs about the same and gives you a real mattress, or a freestanding cabinet bed gives you a real queen. We would rather point you there than sell you a convertible for a job it does badly.

Do cheap sleeper sofas need assembly?
