Every argument against a daybed is about the room it is in, and a guest room removes all of them. Nobody is trying to make it look like a sofa. Nobody is sitting on it daily. It can just be a bed.

Which makes it the best guest bed on this site, and the comparison is not close. A daybed takes a standard twin mattress at any depth the frame allows — no bi-folding, no tri-folding, no cavity — so the sleeping surface can be a conventional 8-inch memory foam mattress rather than a folding compromise. And it is already made up when someone arrives at eleven at night.

Only the daybed offers a conventional, non-folding mattress. That is the entire argument and it is a strong one: everything else on this site is compromising the sleeping surface in exchange for the furniture doing a second job, and in a guest room the second job does not exist.

The one thing a daybed gives up is width. A twin is 38 inches, so a couple cannot share one — for that you want the Manila queen/full at 84 by 63 inches, or a folding format.

Which frame, by what the room has to do

One guest, occasionally. Any of the twin frames. The Bushwick publishes an 8-inch mattress maximum and both capacities (400 pounds on the daybed, 250 on the trundle), which makes it the least guesswork.

Two guests who are not a couple. A twin/twin trundle — the Bushwick or the Manila. Note the trundle capacity: 250 and 225 pounds respectively, which is a child or a light adult and not a second full-size guest.

A couple. The Manila queen/full: 84 by 63 inches, 500 pounds on the daybed and 450 on the full-size trundle. That is the only frame here that genuinely sleeps two adults on the top and two more below.

The room is also an office. A daybed 41 inches deep plus a walkway is about six feet, and a desk chair needs three. Consider a wall bed with a desk instead, or a futon if the wall is not available.

The mattress, which is most of the experience

Eight inches, memory foam or hybrid, within the frame’s stated limit. The Zinus eight-inch is the obvious default: two inches of memory foam, two of airflow comfort foam, four of high-density base, CertiPUR-US certified, and it arrives compressed so it has no doorway problem.

The one figure to check is the twin capacity. Zinus rates its twin at 250 pounds against 500 for every larger size, and twin is what a daybed takes. If the guest is heavier than that, look at a hybrid with a coil base instead.

One thing people forget

A daybed made up with a normal duvet looks like a bed, which in a guest room is correct and desirable. Do not buy bolsters for a guest room daybed — save that money for the mattress.

The details guests actually notice

Something to put a glass on. A daybed has sides, so a bedside table has to be beyond the end rather than beside the pillow. A small stool at the open end works better than a proper nightstand.

A light they can reach. Guest rooms overwhelmingly have one ceiling light and one switch by the door. A clip lamp on the daybed rail costs almost nothing and is the single most appreciated thing in a guest room.

The creak. Metal tube frames creak, all of them, and a guest will lie awake being polite about it. A folded towel between the slats and the frame at the contact points genuinely helps. So does tightening every bolt after the first night of use.
