A trundle is a second bed on castors that lives under the first one. Two people sleep in the footprint of one bed, which is a genuinely good idea and is sold slightly more enthusiastically than the specifications support.

Two things to check before you believe the two-beds claim. The trundle is rated separately from the daybed and it is always lower — often by half. And the trundle needs its own width of clear floor to roll out into, which is floor you have to have.

225 pounds is a child. 250 pounds is a light adult. Neither is a second guest bed in the way the product photography implies, and only the Manila queen/full at 450 pounds is genuinely rated for an adult on the lower level.

That is the single most useful sentence on this page. If the trundle needs to sleep a grown-up regularly, the queen/full Manila is the frame, and it is 84 by 63 inches, which is a large piece of furniture.

The floor the trundle needs

A trundle rolls out sideways, and it needs roughly its own width of clear floor.

The Bushwick is the frame that lets you do the arithmetic, because it publishes both: daybed 41 inches deep, trundle 40.5 inches wide, so 81.5 inches of depth with both beds in use. A Manila queen/full is 63 inches of daybed plus a 56.5-inch trundle, which is nearly ten feet before any walkway.

Add 30 to 36 inches of walkway — the figure we use across the site, based on the ADA accessible-route minimum of 36 inches clear width — and a twin/twin trundle in use wants about nine and a half feet measured out from the wall.

What most rooms actually do

Use the trundle occasionally and store it closed most of the time. As permanent double-occupancy it needs a room most people do not have; as an occasional second bed it is excellent.

The trundle mattress is a separate problem

A trundle is a shallow tray. Six inches or less, or the drawer will not close, and that caps what the lower bed can be.

Castors, locking, and the thing that goes wrong

All the trundles here run on four castors with two locking and two free — the Manila and the Bushwick both specify it. Lock them when the bed is in use, because an unlocked trundle walks across a hard floor when someone turns over, and it walks away from the daybed, which leaves a gap.

The thing that goes wrong is carpet. Small hard castors on medium-pile carpet do not roll, they plow, and the trundle becomes a two-person job to move. On carpet, a bed with a fixed storage drawer is often better than a trundle, and a plain daybed with a box underneath is better still.

The other failure is the gap. A trundle rolled out is at a different height from the daybed, so you never get one continuous surface — do not buy a trundle expecting to make a king. It is two separate beds at two heights.
