A small apartment has no linen closet. That sounds like a minor detail and it is the single most common reason a sofa bed stops being opened: if the duvet, the sheets and the pillows live on a shelf in another room, converting the sofa becomes a four-trip job and people stop doing it.

Storage built into the sofa fixes that, and it is genuinely rare. Most convertibles have nothing; the three below have a published cavity you can measure against a duvet.

Serta publishes no cavity figure for the Active, which is marked as unstated in its spec block. Its storage is a lift-seat design rather than a chaise, which means it sits in the main body of the sofa and is reachable without moving off the chaise side.

Both of the sofas with a published cavity put it inside a chaise, and a chaise is permanent depth. That is the trade.

Which makes the Serta Active the interesting option for a small room: it gets you under-seat storage at 34.8 inches of depth, against 55 inches for the chaise designs. The honest cost is that Serta does not publish a weight capacity for it, which for sleeping furniture is a real gap.

Cheaper ways to solve the same problem

Storage inside the sofa is convenient rather than essential, and there are two cheaper routes to the same outcome.

A trundle daybed, where the trundle is the storage. When the lower bed is not in use, it is a large flat drawer. A Novogratz Bushwick’s trundle is 71 by 40.5 inches — far more than any sofa cavity here. Trundle daybeds.

Or a flat storage box on castors under any sofa. Unglamorous, costs almost nothing, and it solves the actual problem, which is distance between the bed and the bedding.

Do sleeper sofas come with storage?
Some do, and it is rarer than the marketing suggests. The COPIAE hides a 55.1 by 26 by 17.3 inch cavity inside its reversible chaise, the HONBAY has 53.1 by 22.4 by 8.9 inches under a lift-top chaise, and the Serta Active has under-seat storage whose dimensions it does not publish.
Will a duvet fit in a sofa bed storage compartment?
Check the depth. A folded queen duvet is roughly 20 by 20 by 10 inches. The COPIAE's 17.3-inch-deep chaise cavity takes a duvet and pillows; the HONBAY's 8.9 inches takes sheets and a thin blanket but not a winter duvet.
Is a storage sofa bed worth the extra depth?
Only if the storage is in the seat rather than a chaise. The chaise designs here are 55 to 86 inches deep permanently against the Serta Active's 34.8 inches. In a small room, a 35-inch sofa plus a storage box on castors beats a 55-inch sofa with a built-in cavity.
Where do you store bedding in a small apartment?
