We have not slept on any of these. We are not a testing lab and we are not going to write you a paragraph about the third night. What we can do is name the three variables that determine whether a sofa bed is comfortable, show which models publish figures for them, and be clear about which ones do not.

Those three: depth of whatever is between you and the frame; the seam or bar the mechanism puts under you; and what supports the sleeping surface. Get all three right and a sofa bed is fine for weeks. Get the second one wrong and no amount of the first one rescues it.

One: depth, and who actually publishes it

Almost nobody in the convertible category publishes a mattress or cushion depth, which makes the ones who do worth noticing.

Seven and a half inches is a genuine mattress depth. Four and a half is not, but 4.5 inches of gel memory foam sitting on a pull-out deck is a large improvement on the two to three inches most factory pull-out mattresses ship with.

Two: the seam or the bar — this is the one that ruins nights

Every mechanism puts something under the sleeper, and the something is different per format.

A pull-out puts a steel crossbar under the small of your back. This is the famous complaint and it is a real one, caused by a thin mattress on a rigid deck. It is also the most fixable problem in the category: a thicker folding mattress genuinely solves it.

A split-back puts a seam across you where the seat meets the back. This is less painful and much less fixable, because it is a join in the furniture rather than a deficit of padding. A topper spans it and then sinks into it. If you are a side sleeper who ends up with a hip in the seam, that is the night.

For sleep comfort, in order: futon frame with an 8-inch mattress, then a pull-out with a replaced mattress, then a memory-foam split-back, then a standard foam split-back, then a factory pull-out mattress on its original deck.

Three: what holds the surface up

A mattress is only as good as the deck. Split-backs are supported by the sofa’s own wood frame across their whole area, which is the most even support in the category — the Serta models specify solid hardwood.

Pull-outs are supported by a sprung or mesh deck on a folding steel frame, which flexes and which is why the crossbar is where it is. Daybeds and futon frames use slats, and slat spacing decides how a thin mattress behaves — the Novogratz Bushwick daybed publishes an 8-inch maximum mattress depth, which tells you the frame is expecting a thin one.

Weight capacity is a proxy for deck rigidity worth reading: 600 pounds on the Novogratz and DHP split-backs, 400 on the Serta Rane, and nothing published at all for the Chelsea.

What to do about the sofa you already own

If it is a pull-out, replace the mattress. That is the whole answer and it is comfortably the highest-value change available. Check the size first — sofa-bed queen is 58 by 72 inches, not 60 by 80 — and confirm the sofa still closes with the new mattress in it.

If it is a split-back, manage the seam rather than trying to pad it: sleep across it rather than along it where the geometry allows, and use a firm rather than soft topper so it bridges instead of sinking. Can you put a mattress topper on a sleeper sofa?
On a pull-out, yes, and a full mattress replacement works better — 4.5 inches of gel memory foam still folds into a standard frame. On a split-back, a topper helps less than people expect, because the problem is a structural seam rather than thin padding. A firm topper bridges the seam better than a soft one.
Which is more comfortable, a futon or a sofa bed?
