“Futon” now means two quite different things in American retail, and the confusion costs people money. It means a convertible sofa whose back folds flat — what Novogratz and DHP sell — and it means a mattress, either one that sits on a bi-folding frame or one that lies on the floor. The first is furniture. The second is bedding. They are shelved together and reviewed together and they are not alternatives to each other.

The practical consequence: the frame barely matters and the mattress decides the entire experience. A six-inch pad on a metal frame and an eight-inch pocket-coil mattress on the identical frame are different products, and the listing will present them as the same category. So this page ranks on mattress and on open footprint, and the rest of the category is on the futons hub.

Decide whether you are buying furniture or bedding

Three formats, and picking the wrong one is the main way this goes wrong.

A convertible futon sofa is what you want if the thing has to look like a sofa for 360 days a year. A futon frame with a real mattress is what you want if someone actually sleeps there regularly. A floor futon is what you want if the guest bed has to disappear completely — a MAXYOYO twin is 10 pounds and rolls up.

Mattress depth is the whole game

A futon mattress has to fold, so the depth is capped by the fold, and the fold type caps it differently. A bi-fold frame folds the mattress once, in the open, so eight inches works. A tri-fold folds it twice, so six is the practical ceiling. A floor futon rolls, so four is typical.

Eight inches with 15-gauge independently encased pocket coils is genuinely a mattress, and it is the reason a futon frame outperforms every convertible sofa on comfort. The honest cost is 59 pounds of mattress on a frame that has to fold, which is stiff for the first dozen folds and never becomes effortless.

What each format costs you in floor

Convertible futon sofas are the most efficient furniture in this whole site by depth gain. The Brittany goes 34.5 to 43.5 inches — nine inches. The Emily goes 34 to 43.5 — nine and a half. The Rane goes 33.1 to 37.6 — four and a half, the smallest gain we have recorded anywhere.

A floor futon has the opposite profile: it needs its full 39-by-80 or 54-by-80 inches of floor while in use, and zero when it is not. In a room where the floor is free at night and needed by day, that is the best trade available.

Are futons comfortable? Honestly, it depends on one number

Mattress depth. Below about six inches, most adults notice the frame or the floor within a couple of nights, and side sleepers notice it on the first. At eight inches with coils, a futon is a bed.

This is why the comfort question has no single answer and why so much of the search volume around it is people asking on forums rather than trusting review sites. The threshold we use

More than roughly six to eight nights a month and a futon should have an eight-inch mattress or you should be looking at a cabinet bed instead. Less than that, and the format is fine.

The right futon by room

Studio apartment. The futon has to be a real sofa, because you live in front of it. See futons for studio apartments.

Dorm room. Weight and doorway width dominate everything else — dorm futons.

Guest room or home office. Nobody sits on it daily, so buy the mattress and ignore the sofa qualities: futons for guest rooms.

Nobody has a spare room. Japanese floor futons, which have no footprint at all when stored.

What is the best futon for a small space?
For a room that has to look like a living room, a split-back convertible with a small depth gain — the Novogratz Brittany gains nine inches when opened, the Serta Rane only four and a half. For a room where someone actually sleeps regularly, a bi-fold frame with an eight-inch pocket-coil mattress, which is a genuinely different class of sleeping surface.
How thick should a futon mattress be?
As thick as the fold allows. A bi-fold frame takes eight inches, a tri-fold about six, and a roll-up floor futon about four. Below six inches most adults feel the frame or the floor within a couple of nights.
Is a futon the same as a sofa bed?
In American retail the words overlap heavily. A convertible futon sofa folds its own back flat and has no separate mattress. A traditional sofa bed pulls a steel frame and folding mattress out of the sofa body. A futon frame is a bracket that holds a real futon mattress. The first two are furniture; the third is furniture plus bedding bought separately.
Can a futon be used as an everyday bed?
With an eight-inch mattress, yes. With a six-inch pad, not comfortably for long. Our threshold is roughly six to eight nights a month: above that, buy the thicker mattress or move to a cabinet bed with a real queen mattress.
What size is a full futon mattress?
75 by 54 inches, the same as a standard full mattress in plan, with depth varying from six to eight inches. That is why a full futon mattress fits a standard full futon frame and a twin mattress does not — futon frames are sized to futon mattresses.
