How we choose what to recommend

What we do not do

We do not physically test these products. Nobody at Fold & Futon has slept on the sofas on this site, assembled the wall beds, or put a tape measure across the daybeds. We have not received free products, we do not run a test lab, and we are not going to write a paragraph about the third night.

That is unusual to say out loud in this category. Several of the sites that outrank us claim numeric “test lab scores,” months of first-hand use in a specific apartment, or certified sleep coaches on staff. Some of that is real and some of it is unfalsifiable either way, and imitating it would be the easiest thing on this site to invent and the hardest thing for you to check.

So we compete on something checkable instead.

What we do: the eleven fields

We identify products that are currently sold, then record the same eleven specification fields for every single one of them from the live retailer or manufacturer listing.

The open footprint and the clearance in front are why this site exists. Every listing in this category tells you how deep a sofa is when it is closed. Almost none tells you how deep it is when someone is asleep on it, and that is the number that decides whether it works in your room. The most expensive mistake in this category is a sofa that fits the wall and blocks the walkway.

Where the numbers come from

The manufacturer’s or retailer’s current listing, recorded on a stated date. Every spec block on this site names its source and the date it was read.

Anything the listing does not state renders “not stated by manufacturer.” Never an estimate, never a rounded guess, never a figure taken from a competitor’s article. A guessed open depth reads exactly like a measured one and is worth less than nothing, because it stops you going to check.

There is one derived field and it is derived only by subtraction. “Clearance in front” states how much deeper the open footprint is than the folded footprint, which is arithmetic on two stated numbers. Where a manufacturer publishes no walkway recommendation, the field says so.

Where we cite an external standard, we name it. The 30-to-36-inch walkway figure used across this site comes from the ADA accessible-route minimum of 36 inches of clear width and from Bestar’s own published recommendation of 30 to 36 inches of clear movement space around an open wall bed.

Why we do not print prices

Three reasons. Live pricing is not currently enabled on this site. Prices in this category change weekly. And a stale price is worse than no price, because it makes you think you know what something costs.

So every price slot reads “check price on Amazon” and links to the current one. If you ever see a hardcoded dollar figure attached to a product on this site, it is a mistake and we would like to know: contact@foldandfuton.com.

We are not the only ones who work this way. Yawnder, the most specialized futon publisher we found, refuses to print prices for the same reason. When live pricing is switched on here it will show a price with the date it was checked, and the number will disappear on its own if it goes stale.

What the scores on product cards mean

They are our own editorial rubric and nothing else. Each product is scored on four to five niche-appropriate metrics — footprint, mattress, mechanism, renter fit and value for the furniture; comfort, depth, foldability, weight and value for the mattresses — and the 8.4-out-of-10 figures with the per-metric bars beside them are that judgment, applied consistently to every product on the site.

They are not customer sentiment. This site holds no third-party scoring data and publishes none: no star counts, no aggregate out of five, no claim that a product is the best-liked anywhere. There are no quoted buyers on this site either, for exactly the same reason — we have no source we could stand behind.

Our scores are visible page content and are deliberately never emitted as structured data. Dressing an editorial opinion up as third-party scoring would contradict everything else on this page.

How picks are chosen

In this order, and the order is the whole method:

1. Fit. Footprint and mechanism first, because a bed that does not fit the room is not a candidate however good it is.
2. Mattress and comfort. Depth, construction, and what the mechanism puts under the sleeper.
3. Value. What the specification profile gives you relative to the band.
4. Documentation. A manufacturer who publishes the numbers ranks above one who does not, because a product you cannot plan a room around is a gamble.

Never commission rate. If a cheaper option at a retailer that pays us less is the better buy, it is the pick. That is stated properly in the editorial policy.

How we handle limitations

Every pick on this site states at least one genuine limitation. Not a softened “something to note” — a real downside, in plain words, in a bordered block with the same visual weight as the positives.

A product with nothing wrong with it has not been looked at properly. And we will recommend against a whole category when that is the honest answer: can you sleep on a sleeper sofa every night answers no, and explains what to buy instead.

How often pages are rechecked

Manufacturers revise dimensions between production runs and listings disappear, so a spec recorded on a date is a spec recorded on a date. Every page shows when it was last updated.

How to correct us

Email contact@foldandfuton.com or use the contact form. Tell us the page and the figure. We will check it against the manufacturer’s current listing, correct it, and re-date the page.

A sentence that cannot survive the question “where did that number come from?” does not ship on this site. If one has, that is a bug and we would rather hear about it than not.
