Sleeper Sofas / Roundup

The Best Sleeper Sofas for a Narrow Doorway

Every product page on this site carries a doorway minimum field. On the convertible sofas, every single one of them reads the same thing: not stated by manufacturer. Here is what to use instead.

How we picked

Ranked on the three things that actually get a sofa through a 30-inch door, in this order: whether it arrives in pieces, whether the arms come off, and what it weighs assembled. Published doorway minimums would have come first if any existed — not one convertible sofa in our registry states one, and we will not invent the figure buyers most need. Nothing here has been physically tested; every figure is read off the manufacturer's live listing on the date in each spec block.

What it's bad at

Best Choice Products does not publish the open dimensions, so you cannot plan the floor space from the listing. Faux leather also gets cold and squeaks.

What it's bad at

The bed is a short twin, 66 by 37.6 inches. That is one adult who does not mind tucking their knees, not two people. The 400 lb limit is also the lowest here.

The pick is the Best Choice Products faux leather convertible futon: 63 lb assembled, armrests that come off, and it ships flat-packed rather than built. In a 1930s apartment with a 28-inch bedroom door and a turn at the top of the stairs, those three facts matter more than any dimension on the listing.

And here is the uncomfortable part of this page, stated up front. Not one of the eleven convertible sofas in our registry publishes a minimum doorway width. Not Serta, not Novogratz, not DHP, not Best Choice Products. The field exists on every product page on this site, and on the sofas it is empty every time, because the manufacturers do not state it and we do not invent numbers. So this page is about the figures that are published, and what they tell you about a doorway.

The doorway arithmetic, done properly

A sofa goes through a door on its side, not upright, and on its side the dimension that has to clear the frame is its depth, not its width. A sofa 81 inches long and 34 inches deep needs 34 inches of opening — and a hallway long enough to swing 81 inches of furniture into once it is through.

Measure the opening, not the door. Take the width between the stops with the door standing open, then subtract the thickness of the leaf if it will not come off its hinges: a 1.75-inch door in a 32-inch frame leaves about 30 inches. Tilting the sofa buys you height, not width, so it does not help with a narrow frame — only with a low one.

Closed depth — the figure that has to clear the frame

Best Choice Products faux leather
30.5 in. deep
Best Choice Products linen
32 in. deep
Serta Rane / Serta Chelsea
33.1 in. deep
Novogratz Tallulah
33.5 in. deep
DHP Emily
34 in. deep
Novogratz Brittany / Vintage Tufted II
34.5 in. deep
Serta Active with storage
34.8 in. deep
COPIAE 80 in. sectional
55.1 in. deep
Novogratz Brittany Sectional
55.5 in. deep

That spread is narrower than it looks. Almost every convertible sold for a small room sits between 30 and 35 inches deep — four inches is the whole range. Which means the depth figure is rarely what saves you. The assembly state is.

Flat-packed beats every dimension on the listing

A sofa that arrives in a box and gets built in the room has no doorway problem, because the largest single piece is a seat base rather than a sofa. A sofa that arrives assembled has to fit through every opening between the truck and the room in one piece, including the turn on the landing.

This is why the two Best Choice Products models lead the page despite publishing less information than anything else in the registry. Both require assembly. The faux leather version is 63 lb with removable armrests; the linen version is 61.5 lb. Those are the numbers that get furniture up a stairwell.

The Serta Rane and the DHP Emily are both legs-only — the body arrives built and you screw the feet on. That is a genuinely different proposition: 88 lb of built sofa for the Emily, 76.5 inches long, with no way to make it smaller. It is a good answer for a ground-floor flat with a standard 32-inch door and a bad one for a third-floor walk-up with a dog-leg landing.

Removable arms are worth more than four inches of depth

The faux leather futon’s armrests detach. On a sofa whose seat is 19 inches deep, taking the arms off is the difference between carrying a 30-inch object and carrying a much narrower one. No manufacturer prices that feature, and in an old building it is the single most useful thing on the listing.

What not to buy when the doorway is the constraint

Anything sectional. The COPIAE 80-inch sectional is 55.1 inches deep and the Novogratz Brittany Sectional is 55.5. Sectionals do come apart, which helps, but the chaise module on the Brittany is 55.5 by 25 inches as a single piece, and that is a wide thing to turn on a landing.

Anything over about 100 lb assembled. The Tallulah is 103.5 lb and 83 inches long; the Vintage Tufted II is 101.5 lb and 81.5 inches. Both are excellent sofas and both are two-person carries you cannot set down halfway up a flight of stairs.

A real pull-out, usually. A pull-out carries a steel deck and a scissor linkage inside the body, which is weight you cannot remove and a shape you cannot collapse. The PUREMIND queen pull-out publishes no closed depth at all, so you cannot even check it against your frame before it arrives.

A cabinet bed, if stairs are the issue. Worth saying because people reach for one as the compact option: the Night & Day Murphy Cube is 170 lb assembled and does not come apart again, and the Arason Creden-ZzZ is 250 lb. Those are covered in the best renter-friendly Murphy beds, where the trade-offs are different.

If nothing fits through the door

Then buy a frame and a mattress separately, because both go through a doorway in a way a sofa does not. A twin daybed frame arrives flat-packed, and a mattress arrives compressed and rolled — the Zinus 8-inch ships in a box and the Linenspa 6-inch decompresses over 24 to 72 hours. Nothing in that route is ever wider than its carton.

The same logic makes a futon frame with a drop-in mattress easier than a convertible sofa: the DHP 8-inch coil futon mattress ships rolled in a 59 by 13 by 13 inch carton, which goes through any door in the country. The measuring method for all of this is set out in how to measure for a sleeper sofa, and the room-by-room alternatives are in studio apartment guest bed ideas.

One more route worth naming: a daybed. It arrives as tube steel or slats in a flat box, weighs 59 to 97 lb spread across several pieces rather than one, and needs no fold mechanism at all. The frames that read as seating during the day are in the best daybeds that look like a couch.

Answers

Common questions

What is the minimum doorway width for a sleeper sofa?
No manufacturer we cover publishes one. Not Serta, not Novogratz, not DHP, not Best Choice Products - the doorway minimum field is empty on every convertible sofa in our registry because the figure is not stated and we will not invent it. Use the closed depth instead: almost every small-room convertible is between 30.5 and 34.8 inches deep, and that depth is what has to clear the frame when the sofa goes through on its side.
Will a sleeper sofa fit through a 30-inch door?
Only if it is shallow or it comes apart. The Best Choice Products faux leather futon is 30.5 inches deep with removable armrests and arrives flat-packed, which is the combination that works. A built 34-inch-deep sofa will not go through a 30-inch opening, and tilting it does not help - tilting changes the height you need, not the width.
Do sleeper sofas come apart to get through a door?
Some do. Both Best Choice Products convertibles require assembly, so the largest single piece is a seat base rather than a sofa, and the faux leather model's armrests detach as well. The Serta Rane and DHP Emily arrive built with only the legs to attach, which means the body has to fit through in one piece.
How do you measure a doorway for furniture?
Measure between the door stops with the door standing open, then subtract the thickness of the leaf if the door will not come off its hinges - a 1.75-inch door in a 32-inch frame leaves roughly 30 inches of usable opening. Then check the hallway beyond it: a sofa 81 inches long needs somewhere to swing that length into once it is through.
What guest bed is easiest to get into an awkward room?
A frame plus a mattress bought separately. Daybed and futon frames ship flat-packed, and mattresses ship compressed and rolled - the DHP 8-inch coil futon mattress arrives in a 59 by 13 by 13 inch carton. Neither component is ever larger than its box, so there is no doorway calculation to get wrong.
