Murphy Beds / Roundup

The Best Murphy Beds for Daily Use

A guest-room wall bed gets opened a dozen times a year. Your own bed gets opened seven hundred. That single number changes which specification matters and which models survive it.

How we picked

Ranked on three things in this order: whether the bed takes a real mattress you chose yourself, how the mechanism is likely to behave after hundreds of cycles rather than dozens, and what the manufacturer will stand behind in writing. Stated weight capacity breaks ties. Nothing here has been physically tested and no lifespan is claimed; the figures come from the manufacturers' own live listings, each one re-checked on 7 October 2026, and where a maker publishes no figure we say so rather than estimate one.

What it's bad at

Dual-mount means it anchors to both the floor and the wall. That is why it is stable, and it is also why most leases make it a conversation with the landlord.

23 inches deep closed and no hydraulics at all — a manual-fold panel bed you assemble flat-packed with ordinary tools.

What it's bad at

Lori is clear that the bed must be anchored to the wall for safety, and it supplies screws for wood and metal studs. It is lighter on your lease than a full cabinet system, but it is not drill-free.

The pick is the Bestar Cielo 66W Queen Murphy Bed. It takes your own 8-to-12-inch queen mattress, states 1,000 lb including that mattress, runs on a dual piston mechanism, and carries a 10-year manufacturer warranty. For a bed that has to come down every night and go up every morning, those are the four facts that matter and it is the only model we cover that publishes all four.

Everything written about wall beds assumes a guest room. That assumption quietly does a lot of work, because a guest bed is opened perhaps twenty times a year and the compromises that come with the format — a thin folding mattress, a two-handed lift, bedding that has to come off — are compromises you meet rarely. Make it your own bed and you meet them twice a day, roughly seven hundred times a year, and the ranking changes completely.

The honest headline for the category is this: for nightly use, a true wall bed that takes a standard mattress beats a cabinet bed with an included tri-fold, every time, on comfort. The reason to buy a cabinet bed anyway is that it needs no drilling, and for a renter that reason is often decisive. Both routes are on this page and both are judged on what their makers publish.

What daily use actually changes

Three things, and none of them are the specification people shop on.

The mechanism moves from a feature to a wear item. Twenty cycles a year is nothing. Seven hundred is a duty cycle. A gas piston is a sealed component with a finite number of strokes in it; a manual fold has no pistons at all and therefore nothing to gas off; a tri-fold cabinet bed slides a platform out and folds a mattress in three, which is more individual movements per cycle than either. No manufacturer in this category publishes a cycle rating, so what you are left with is the warranty term and the number of parts that can fail, and we rank on those rather than inventing a figure.

The mattress stops being a detail. A 6-inch tri-fold is adequate for two nights and a known compromise for three hundred. The wall beds here let you supply your own within a published window: Bestar states 8 to 12 inches and 60 to 90 lb, and Lori states 8, 10, or no thicker than 12 inches, with memory foam, innerspring or hybrid recommended and latex advised against. That is the single biggest comfort difference on this page.

Bedding becomes a daily chore or it does not. A vertical wall bed holds a fitted sheet and a duvet in place when it folds up because the mattress is strapped and the bed closes on itself; a cabinet bed folds the mattress in three, and anything on it has to come off first. Nobody writes this on a spec sheet, and it is the thing owners mention most.

The four daily-use facts, as published

Own mattress 8–12 in. / 60–90 lb · dual piston · 1,000 lb · 10-year warranty

Why the Bestar is the reference for nightly use

The Cielo closes to 23.5 inches of depth and 85.9 inches of height in a 65.3-inch-wide cabinet, and inside it is a genuine 60-by-80 queen that you bought. That last part is the whole argument. You are not sleeping on a mattress chosen by a furniture company to fold in three; you are sleeping on whatever queen you would have bought for a normal bed, inside the published window of 8 to 12 inches thick and 60 to 90 lb.

The 1,000 lb capacity is stated including the mattress, which is the useful way to state it — a 70 lb queen comes off the total before anyone gets in. It is the highest published figure of anything we cover in any category, and the full comparison is in how much weight a Murphy bed can hold.

The honest cost is the install. Dual-mount means the cabinet anchors to the wall structureand the floor: Bestar’s own instructions involve removing the baseboard, finding studs or masonry, and drilling into the floor, with two people. That is exactly why it is the steadiest thing here after seven hundred cycles, and exactly why it is a conversation with a landlord rather than a weekend purchase. It also wants 88.9 inches of ceiling, which rules out a lot of older apartments before anything else does.

Check the ceiling before anything else

88.9 inches is 7 ft 5 in. A standard 8-foot ceiling clears it; a basement conversion or a pre-war apartment with 7-foot ceilings does not, and no amount of wanting it will change that. If the ceiling is the binding constraint, the answer is a horizontal bed — Lori’s own guidance is that vertical models want at least 8 feet and horizontal models suit rooms under 8 feet. We cover that field in the best horizontal Murphy beds.

The case for a mechanism with nothing in it

The Lori vertical queen is the second pick and it gets there by subtraction. It is 23 inches deep closed, takes a standard queen up to 12 inches and 80 lb, and has no pistons and no springs at all — it is a manual fold. You lift it; it stays up.

For daily use that is a genuinely interesting trade. A mechanism that does not exist cannot wear out, cannot start creeping down at three in the morning, and cannot need a service part that is discontinued in nine years. What you pay for it is effort: every single morning, you lift the bed yourself rather than guiding a piston. With a 12-inch mattress at the 80 lb ceiling, that is a real lift, and it is the reason this is second rather than first.

Lori is also explicit that the bed must be anchored to the wall, and supplies screws for both wood and metal studs. It is a lighter touch on a rented wall than a dual-mount cabinet system — no floor anchors, no baseboard removal — but it is not drill-free, and anyone who has been told “no holes” should read can you put a Murphy bed in an apartment before shopping. Lori publishes no weight capacity, which on a bed used nightly is the gap we would most like closed.

One more Lori detail worth having: the guidance against latex. Latex is dense and heavy for its thickness, and a folding bed cares about mattress weight in a way a platform bed does not. Memory foam, innerspring and hybrid are what Lori recommends, and the mattress field across the whole category is covered in the best Murphy bed mattresses.

The renter route, and what it costs you nightly

If you cannot drill, every wall bed above is off the table and a cabinet bed is the answer. A cabinet bed is freestanding: nothing is anchored to anything, and the piece is furniture rather than an installation.

The Night & Day Murphy Cube is the one we would live with. Closed it is 64.1 by 26.4 by 36.6 inches — about ten square feet of floor, a credenza you can put a lamp on. Open it is 64.1 by 80.3 inches, and 80.3 inches of length is a genuinely full-size sleeping surface, which is not true of every cabinet bed sold as a queen. Night & Day states conversion in under a minute and backs the piece with a limited 10-year warranty, and the listing was still current in six finishes when we re-checked it on 7 October 2026.

The compromises are real and they are daily. The mattress is an optional tri-fold measuring 80 by 63 by 6 inches: six inches of gel-infused memory foam with two fold lines across it. Six inches is thin for nightly use, and the fold lines are where you will feel it. The piece is 170 lb assembled and does not come apart again, so a third-floor walk-up is a problem you solve once, loudly. And Night & Day publishes no weight capacity.

The cabinet bed trade, stated plainly

You are swapping mattress quality for the right to not drill. That is a reasonable swap for a guest room and a harder one for three hundred nights a year. If the lease is the only obstacle and the room could take a wall bed, the wall bed is the better bed — our full lease-first field is in the best renter-friendly Murphy beds.

Which is why the fourth pick goes back to the wall: for nightly use, the plainest wall bed beats the best cabinet bed on the thing you are buying. The Bestar Versatile 65W is the stripped-back sibling of the Cielo: same standard-queen window of 8 to 12 inches and 60 to 90 lb, same stated 1,000 lb including the mattress, same dual piston mechanism and the same 10-year warranty, on a steel wall bed frame in an engineered wood cabinet, without the LED strip across the top. Its open bed extends 92 inches from the wall and Bestar asks for the same 30 to 36 inches of clearance around it.

Its limitation is a number, and it is the one that will decide this for most people: the Versatile wants more ceiling than the Cielo does. Our recorded figure for the model is 92 inches against the Cielo’s 88.9, and some Versatile configurations publish more still. In an older apartment with 8-foot ceilings that three-inch difference is the whole decision, which is why the cheaper bed is fourth rather than second.

The floor you get back, and the floor you need

The reason to do any of this nightly is that a wall bed is the only guest-bed format that gives the floor back every morning instead of occupying it permanently. A sleeper sofa is 33 to 55 inches of depth, forever. A daybed is a bed in the room, forever. A wall bed closed is 23 to 26.4 inches of depth against one wall, and that depth is usually cabinetry you were going to want anyway.

The number you have to earn that with is the open extension, and it is large. Here is the published set.

Closed depth against open extension, as published

Bestar Cielo 66W
23.5 in. closed → extends 93.1 in. from the wall
Lori vertical queen
23 in. closed → extends 86.2 in. from the wall
Night & Day Murphy Cube
26.4 in. closed → 80.3 in. open
Bestar Versatile 65W
Closed depth not stated → extends 92 in. from the wall
Arason Creden-ZzZ, for reference
25 in. closed → opens to 81 in. deep
Bestar stated movement space
30 to 36 in. of clear space around the open bed

Read the first row as the pattern: 23.5 inches of permanent footprint, and 93.1 inches of temporary one, plus the 30 to 36 inches of clear movement space Bestar asks for around the open bed. That is roughly ten and a half feet from the wall, every night, in a room that gets it all back by nine in the morning. Whether that trade is worth it is the question is a Murphy bed worth it works through, and if the room has to keep its seating as well, the comparison is Murphy bed vs sleeper sofa — or, where the wall is too short for both a bed and a three-seat sofa, the best loveseat sleeper sofas.

Who should buy which

Buy the Bestar Cielo 66W if you own the place or the landlord has said yes, the ceiling clears 88.9 inches, and this is your actual bed. Real mattress, highest published capacity, dual pistons, 10-year warranty. Accept the floor anchors and the two-person install.

Buy the Lori vertical queen if you want a real mattress with the fewest moving parts and the lightest install, and you do not mind lifting it yourself every morning. It needs studs and it publishes no capacity, which are the two things to weigh.

Buy the Night & Day Murphy Cube if drilling is not allowed and the sleeping surface has to be full length. Ten square feet closed, 80.3 inches open, 10-year limited warranty. The 6-inch tri-fold is the nightly compromise and the 170 lb is the delivery-day one.

Buy the Bestar Versatile 65W if you want the Cielo’s mattress window, capacity and warranty without paying for the LED strip, and your ceiling has the extra inches to spare. Measure the ceiling first: it is the only reason this is not the value pick outright.

And if nightly use is really the question, read the equivalent page for the other format before you commit — the best sleeper sofas for daily use reaches a less optimistic conclusion about sofas, for reasons that are all in the geometry.

Answers

Common questions

Can you sleep on a Murphy bed every night?
On a true wall bed, yes - it takes a standard mattress you chose yourself, so the sleeping surface is the same one you would have had on an ordinary bed. Bestar's window is 8 to 12 inches thick and 60 to 90 lb; Lori's is 8, 10, or no thicker than 12 inches. On a cabinet bed with a 6-inch tri-fold mattress and two fold lines across it, nightly use is a known compromise rather than an equal one.
Do Murphy bed mechanisms wear out with daily use?
No manufacturer in this category publishes a cycle rating, so we will not invent one. What you can compare is the number of parts that can fail and the warranty behind them. A dual piston system is a sealed wear component and Bestar backs its beds for 10 years. A manual-fold bed like Lori's has no pistons or springs at all, so there is nothing to service - the cost is that you lift the bed yourself every morning.
What ceiling height do you need for a Murphy bed?
Bestar states a minimum of 88.9 inches - 7 ft 5 in - for the Cielo queen, and 92 inches for the Versatile. Lori's guidance is that vertical queens want ceilings of at least 8 feet while horizontal models suit rooms under 8 feet. Measure the ceiling before anything else, because it is the one constraint no model gets around.
Is a cabinet bed good enough for everyday sleeping?
It is the right answer when you cannot drill and the wrong answer on comfort. A cabinet bed is freestanding, so nothing is anchored to the wall or floor, and the Night & Day Cube opens to a full 80.3 inches of length. But the mattress is a 6-inch tri-fold with two fold lines, which is adequate for a weekend and a real compromise across three hundred nights.
Does a Murphy bed hold the bedding when it folds up?
A vertical wall bed generally does, because the mattress is strapped and the bed closes on itself with the sheets and duvet in place. A cabinet bed folds the mattress in three, so bedding has to come off first - which is why the Arason Creden-ZzZ's 11-inch storage drawer is a more useful feature than it first appears. No manufacturer puts this on a spec sheet; it is the difference owners notice most.
How much weight can a Murphy bed hold?
Bestar states 1,000 lb including the mattress across its queen range, which is the highest published figure of anything we cover. Arason states 500 lb for the Creden-ZzZ. Lori and Night & Day publish no capacity figure for their beds, which on furniture used nightly is a genuine gap rather than an oversight you should read past.
