How Much Weight Can a Murphy Bed Hold?

This is one of the few questions in the category with a straight answer, because wall bed manufacturers actually publish the number. Here is every one of them.

The short answer

A full-size wall bed from a major manufacturer states 1,000 lb including the mattress - that is Bestar's published figure across its queen range. A DIY steel frame kit states 600 lb evenly distributed, a freestanding cabinet bed 500 lb, and a cot-size folding unit 485 lb. The mattress counts toward the total, and separate mattress weight and depth limits apply on top.

A bedroom wall fitted with tall white cabinetry and shelving beside the bed

A queen wall bed from a major manufacturer holds 1,000 lb including the mattress. That is Bestar’s published figure, stated across its queen range, and it is the highest capacity of anything we cover in any category. A DIY steel frame kit states 600 lb evenly distributed. A freestanding cabinet bed states 500 lb. A cot-size rolling unit states 485 lb.

Two things make that number more useful than it first looks, and both are easy to miss. The first is that it is stated including the mattress, so a 70 lb queen mattress comes off the total before anybody gets in. The second is that the overall capacity is not the only limit — there is a separate mattress weight window and a separate mattress depth window, and on a piston or spring-balanced mechanism those exist for a reason that has nothing to do with strength.

Bestar Orion desk surface
50 lb; each shelf 25 lb

Three of those rows say nothing, and that is information too. Lori and Night & Day both publish detailed dimensions, ceiling requirements and mattress limits, and neither states an overall bed capacity. They may well be perfectly sound; we cannot tell you that from a specification, and we are not going to borrow a figure from a comparable product.

The last row is worth separating out. On the Orion, the fold-out desk is rated 50 lb and each shelf 25 lb — nothing like the bed’s 1,000 lb. People reasonably assume the whole unit shares one rating. A laptop and a monitor is 50 lb; a monitor, a printer and a stack of books is not.

What the figure means, and what it does not

It is a static rating, and it includes the mattress. Bestar states 1,000 lb including the mattress, and its queen beds take a mattress of 60 to 90 lb. So the usable figure for occupants is roughly 910 to 940 lb, which is not a constraint any household will meet.

It is whole-piece, not per person. As with sofas, these capacities are stated for the furniture rather than per sleeper. Nobody in this category publishes a dynamic or impact rating, which means none of these numbers are a statement about children jumping on the bed.

“Evenly distributed” is a real qualifier. Murphy Bed Depot states 600 lb evenly distributed, which is the honest way to express what a steel frame does: load spread across the slats, not concentrated at one point on an unsupported span.

It says nothing about the wall. A dual-mount wall bed is anchored to the floor and the wall, and the bed’s rating assumes the anchoring was done correctly into structure. A 1,000 lb bed hung off drywall anchors is not a 1,000 lb bed. That is the subject of are Murphy beds safe.

The mattress limits matter more than the capacity

In practice nobody tests a 1,000 lb limit, and almost everybody runs into the mattress window. It is the specification that actually governs what you can do with a wall bed.

Night & Day Murphy Cube
Optional tri-fold, 80 × 63 × 6 in.
Costway rolling unit
Included 4 in. foam mattress

The reason there is a minimum as well as a maximum on the Bestar range is the lift mechanism. A piston or spring-balanced bed is counterweighted for a mattress inside a stated weight band. Too light and the bed wants to spring upward; too heavy and it comes down faster than it should and resists being lifted. Neither is a strength problem and both are a safety problem.

Which is why “no futons” appears on Bestar’s listings. A folding futon mattress is outside the band in both depth behavior and weight distribution. Matching the window is the whole job, and the shortlist that fits is in the best Murphy bed mattresses.

How wall beds compare with everything else we cover

Put every published capacity on this site in one list and the wall bed is at the top by a wide margin, because it is a steel mechanism carrying a real mattress rather than upholstery carrying a fold.

How we picked

This is a reference page rather than a ranking, so the four picks are simply the models the four headline figures belong to: the 1,000 lb wall bed, the 600 lb DIY frame, the 500 lb cabinet bed and the 485 lb rolling unit. Every capacity is quoted from the manufacturer's own listing, and models that publish nothing are listed as publishing nothing rather than being estimated from comparable products.

What it's bad at

Dual-mount means it anchors to both the floor and the wall. That is why it is stable, and it is also why most leases make it a conversation with the landlord.

Answers

Common questions

How much weight can a Murphy bed hold?
A queen wall bed from a major manufacturer states 1,000 lb including the mattress - that is Bestar's published figure across its Cielo, Versatile, Pur and Orion queen models. A DIY steel frame kit states 600 lb evenly distributed, a freestanding cabinet bed 500 lb, and a cot-size rolling folding unit 485 lb.
Does the Murphy bed weight limit include the mattress?
On Bestar's queen range, yes - the 1,000 lb figure is stated as including the mattress. Since those beds take a mattress of 60 to 90 lb, the usable allowance for occupants is roughly 910 to 940 lb. Always check the phrasing on the specific listing, because not every manufacturer states it the same way.
Why do Murphy beds have a minimum mattress weight?
Because the lift mechanism is counterweighted. A piston or spring-balanced bed is set up for a mattress inside a stated weight band - Bestar's queens specify 60 to 90 lb. Too light and the bed wants to spring upward on its own; too heavy and it descends faster than it should and resists being lifted. Both are safety issues rather than strength issues.
Can you put a futon mattress on a Murphy bed?
Bestar explicitly says no futons on its queen wall beds. A folding futon mattress sits outside the stated depth and weight band and distributes its weight differently from the 8 to 12 inch, 60 to 90 lb mattress the mechanism is balanced for. Use a standard 60 by 80 inch mattress inside the published window.
How much weight can a Murphy bed desk hold?
Far less than the bed. On the Bestar Orion the fold-out desk is rated 50 lb and each shelf 25 lb, against 1,000 lb for the bed itself. That is a laptop and a monitor rather than a workstation with two screens and a printer, and it is easy to assume the whole unit shares one rating when it does not.
