Guides / Straight answer

Is a Murphy Bed Worth It?

Three numbers answer this and none of them is the price: how much floor you get back, how high your ceiling is, and how many mornings a year the bed actually goes up.

The short answer

Yes, if the room has to do two jobs every day and your ceiling clears about 89 inches. A queen wall bed is 23.5 inches deep closed and extends 93.1 inches open, so it hands back roughly 31 square feet of floor every morning while sleeping on a real 8-to-12-inch queen. No, if you cannot anchor into the wall, the ceiling is under 89 inches, or the bed will be left down most of the time — in which case you have bought a bed with extra steps.

A bright apartment room with wooden flooring and a large window

The honest version of this question is not whether a wall bed is good. It is whether the floor it gives back is worth the installation, the ceiling constraint and the daily habit. For some rooms that is an easy yes and for others it is a clear no, and the three numbers below tell you which you are in under five minutes.

We do not print prices anywhere on this site, so this page cannot do a cost-benefit sum for you. What it can do is quantify the benefit precisely, which is the half of that sum nobody else bothers with.

Number one: how much floor you actually get back

This is calculable from published figures and it is bigger than people expect. A Bestar Cielo 66W is 23.5 inches deep closed and extends 93.1 inches from the wall when it is open. The difference is 69.6 inches of depth, across 65.3 inches of width.

Floor reclaimed each morning, from closed and open footprints

Bestar Cielo 66W
69.6 in. of depth × 65.3 in. wide — about 31.6 sq ft
Night & Day Murphy Cube
53.9 in. of depth × 64.1 in. wide — about 24.0 sq ft
Arason Creden-ZzZ
56 in. of depth × 64 in. wide — about 24.9 sq ft
Novogratz Brittany futon, for comparison
9 in. of depth × 81.5 in. wide — about 5.1 sq ft
Clear movement space to keep around it
30–36 in. (ADA accessible route is 36 in.)

Thirty-one square feet is a meaningful fraction of a small bedroom and most of a home office’s usable floor. It is also six times what a convertible sofa gives back when you close it, because a sofa only ever reclaims the few inches the bed added — the sofa itself never goes anywhere.

That is the real case for a wall bed, and it is a strong one. It is also the case that evaporates completely if the bed stays down.

Number two: your ceiling, measured not assumed

A vertical wall bed rotates a queen mattress through ninety degrees, so it needs headroom to swing. Every manufacturer publishes a minimum and the figures are not interchangeable.

Stated minimum ceiling heights

Bestar Cielo 66W
88.9 in. minimum
Bestar Orion 97W with desk
90.4 in. minimum
Bestar Versatile 65W
92 in. minimum
Standard 8 ft residential ceiling
96 in. — clears all of the above
A low basement or older apartment
84–90 in. — clears some, or none

Three inches separate the Cielo from the Versatile, and in an older apartment that is the difference between fits and does not fit. Measure floor to ceiling in the exact spot the unit will stand, and measure it before you shortlist anything, because it eliminates models rather than inconveniencing them.

If the ceiling is the problem, the answer is a horizontal wall bed — the Lori Beds horizontal queen is 84 inches wide by 23 inches deep by 64 inches high closed, so it needs a long wall instead of a tall one. The options are in the best horizontal Murphy beds. If the ceiling and the wall are both short, a cabinet bed needs neither.

Number three: whether you are allowed to fix it to the building

A dual-mount wall bed anchors into the wall structure and into the floor. That is not optional and it is not a preference — it is what stops a counterbalanced queen mattress tipping. Bestar’s own installation is a two-person job for that reason.

Most residential leases treat anchoring into studs as an alteration requiring permission, and many flatly prohibit it. There is a whole page on how that conversation usually goes: can you put a Murphy bed in an apartment.

If the answer is no, you are not out of the category. Cabinet beds are freestanding — the Arason Creden-ZzZ explicitly needs no bolting to floor or wall, and the Night & Day Murphy Cube anchors to nothing. You give up a couple of inches of closed depth and a few inches of mattress thickness, and you keep most of the floor benefit. The Costway rolling cabinet goes further still and rolls on castors, at the cost of being cot size.

Weight is the constraint that replaces fixings

A freestanding cabinet bed is 170 lb (Night & Day) to 250 lb (Arason) assembled, and neither comes apart again. If the room is up two flights with a turn in the stairs, that is the specification that decides this — not the mechanism.

When the answer is honestly no

When the bed will be left down. The entire value of a wall bed is the morning habit. If the bed stays down five days out of seven, you have bought a queen bed with a cabinet around it, a ceiling requirement and an anchoring job — and a plain bed frame would have been a better purchase. Be honest about this one; it is the most common way the money is wasted.

When the room has no 65-inch stretch of clear wall. A queen vertical wall bed needs about 65 inches of width and nothing in front of it for 93 inches when open. Radiators, windows that open inward and doors all rule out walls that look available.

When the room needs seating, not a bed. A wall bed closed is a cabinet you cannot sit on. In a studio that is often the deciding fact, and the answer is a convertible sofa or a wall bed with a sofa built in front of it — see the best Murphy bed sofa combos.

When the guest comes twice a year. Thirty-one square feet reclaimed daily is worth a lot. Thirty-one square feet reclaimed twice a year is worth very little, and a futon that is also your sofa is the better buy. The straight comparison is in Murphy bed vs futon.

So: worth it or not?

Worth it when the room is a home office, a studio or a nursery that also has to sleep an adult; the ceiling clears 89 inches; you can anchor; and the bed genuinely goes up every morning. In that case it is the best product in this entire category and nothing else comes close — a real queen mattress and 31 square feet of floor is not a compromise at all.

Worth it with a change of model when you rent or cannot drill. A cabinet bed keeps most of the benefit, needs no fixings, and includes somewhere for the bedding. Start at the best renter-friendly Murphy beds.

Not worth it when the bed will stay down, the wall is not there, or the room needs seating more than it needs a bed. Those are three different reasons and each one is sufficient on its own.

If you are still weighing it, read how Murphy beds work for the mechanism and are Murphy beds safe for the question everybody asks second.

How we picked

The reference anchored wall bed, the best freestanding queen, and the only unit in the category that needs no fixings at all — because the three honest answers to this question are yes, yes-but-not-anchored, and no. Picks sit after the advice rather than before it, because anybody who reads the ceiling and lease sections and finds a problem should not be buying anything on this page.

What it's bad at

Dual-mount means it anchors to both the floor and the wall. That is why it is stable, and it is also why most leases make it a conversation with the landlord.

Answers

Common questions

How much space does a Murphy bed actually save?
On a Bestar Cielo 66W, about 31.6 square feet - it is 23.5 inches deep closed and extends 93.1 inches open, across 65.3 inches of width. A cabinet bed reclaims rather less, around 24 to 25 square feet. A convertible sofa, by comparison, only gives back the few inches the open bed added, about 5 square feet.
Is a Murphy bed a good idea in a small apartment?
It is the strongest option in the category if two conditions hold: the ceiling clears the manufacturer's minimum - 88.9 to 92 inches on the queen beds we cover - and your lease allows anchoring into the wall and floor. If it does not, a freestanding cabinet bed keeps most of the benefit with no fixings.
What are the disadvantages of a Murphy bed?
It needs a tall clear wall, it anchors to the building on most models, it is a two-person installation, and it gives you nothing to sit on when closed. The big one is behavioral: the benefit only exists if the bed goes up every morning, and a wall bed left down is a bed with extra steps.
Do Murphy beds damage walls?
A dual-mount wall bed is fixed into the wall structure and the floor, so removing one leaves fixing holes to make good - that is the trade for the stability. Freestanding cabinet beds anchor to nothing and leave nothing behind, which is why they are the usual answer for renters.
Are Murphy beds comfortable to sleep on every night?
Yes, because the mattress is a normal mattress. Bestar specifies your own 8-to-12-inch queen at 60 by 80 inches, so the sleeping surface is whatever you choose to put on it rather than a folding compromise. Cabinet beds are a step down, using a 6-inch tri-fold mattress with two fold seams.
