Murphy Bed vs Sleeper Sofa

The counterintuitive result: the wall bed has the smaller permanent footprint. What it costs you is a landlord conversation and a ceiling.

Most people assume a sofa bed is the space-saving option and a wall bed is the luxury one. On the numbers that is backwards, and it is worth seeing why.

A Bestar Cielo queen wall bed is 23.5 inches deep closed. A Novogratz Brittany sofa is 34.5 inches deep closed. So the wall bed occupies eleven inches less floor, permanently, while also containing a conventional 8-to-12-inch queen mattress rather than a folded sofa cushion.

What the wall bed costs you is 93.1 inches of projection for the hours somebody is asleep, a ceiling of at least 88.9 inches, an installation, and — usually — a landlord who agrees.

The wall bed wins on permanent footprint and on mattress. The sofa wins on total committed floor at any moment and on being seating. The cabinet bed sits between: 26.4 inches closed, a real mattress, and no seating at all.

Whether 93 inches for eight hours is acceptable depends entirely on the room. In a bedroom or a study, nothing else needs that floor at night. In a living room that is also a corridor, it is a problem.

The two things that decide it for most people

Ceiling height. A vertical queen wall bed needs 88.9 inches on a Cielo, 90.4 on an Orion, 91.1 on a Pur with sofa, 92 on a Versatile. Measure at the wall and to the lowest obstruction on it. Under about 7 ft 5 in and the format is off the table unless you go horizontal.

Your lease. A dual-mount wall bed anchors to the wall and the floor, which is the part most leases prohibit. A stud-anchored panel bed is a lighter intervention — Lori supplies screws for wood and metal studs — and a cabinet bed anchors to nothing at all. If both are blockers

A cabinet bed is the answer, and it is a good one: a real mattress, freestanding, 25 to 26 inches deep closed. Its costs are 170 to 250 pounds of furniture that does not come apart, and no seating.

Cost, effort and what wears out

A wall bed is the most expensive format on this site and the longest-lived. Bestar warrants its queen wall beds for ten years and rates them to 1,000 pounds including the mattress. Installation is a genuine two-person job with a stud finder.

A convertible sofa is the cheapest and the most disposable. The frames publish 400 to 600 pounds, there is almost nothing mechanical to fail, and what actually fails is the foam — it compresses where you sit, which on a split-back is also where you sleep.

Is a Murphy bed more comfortable than a sofa bed?

Yes, and by a wide margin, because a wall bed takes a conventional 8 to 12 inch mattress of your own choosing while a convertible sofa is upholstery foam with a structural fold seam. Bestar's queen wall beds specify a 60 by 80 inch mattress between 60 and 90 pounds — an actual bed.

Does a Murphy bed take up less space than a sleeper sofa?

Permanently, yes: a Bestar Cielo is 23.5 inches deep closed against a Novogratz Brittany's 34.5. The wall bed's cost is temporary — it extends 93.1 inches when down, against the sofa's 43.5 — so the question is whether you need that floor at night.

Which is better for a studio apartment?

Are Murphy beds worth the money?
