Are Murphy Beds Safe?

One: the anchor has to go into structure

This is the whole of it. A wall bed transfers a large moment into the wall when it swings, and that load has to land on framing.

Bestar’s dual-mount mechanism attaches to both the floor and the wall structure, which is why it is rated where it is. Lori supplies screws for wood and metal studs and is explicit that the bed must be anchored to the wall for safety. Neither is optional, and drywall anchors are not a substitute for either.

If you cannot locate studs confidently, that is the point to stop and get someone in — or to buy a cabinet bed instead, which anchors to nothing because the mechanism is entirely inside a freestanding cabinet.

Two: the mattress has to be in range, at both ends

The lift is balanced for a mattress weight, and the range has a minimum as well as a maximum. That surprises people and it is the more interesting half.

Too heavy and the bed wants to fall rather than descend, and the mechanism is working outside its balance. Too light and it does not stay closed properly, which is the failure mode that catches people who put a thin foam mattress in a queen cabinet.

Count the bedding. A heavy comforter on a mattress already near the top of the window puts you over it. And no box spring, ever — it will not fit and it is not designed to be held vertical.

Three: tension the mechanism to the mattress

On a spring-balance mechanism — which is what DIY kits use — the springs are adjustable and have to be set for your actual mattress. A bed that slams shut or drops fast has not been tensioned; it is not broken.

On a piston system, the pistons are matched to a weight range at manufacture and cannot be adjusted, which is why the mattress limits are stated so precisely. A piston that has lost pressure over years shows up as a bed that is heavy to lift, and it is a replaceable part.

Either way: operate the bed a dozen times after installation, empty, and watch what it does at the top and bottom of its travel before you put a mattress in it.

Using one safely day to day

Keep the landing zone clear. Bestar recommends 30 to 36 inches of clear movement space around the open bed. A bed coming down onto a coffee table is the realistic accident in this category, not a spontaneous fold-up.

Use the bedding straps. They are there so the bedding does not foul the closing action. Bunched bedding is what makes a bed hard to close, and forcing it is how hinges get bent.

Do not sit on the foot of the open bed. The capacity figures — 1,000 pounds on Bestar, 600 evenly distributed on a DIY frame — are distributed ratings, not point loads at the far end of a lever.

Check the fixings annually. Two minutes with a screwdriver. Anything that swings works its fasteners loose.
