The problem nobody warns you about: the bedding

A wall bed folds a mattress into a cabinet. It does not fold a duvet, two pillows and a fitted sheet into anything. On a conventional vertical wall bed those come off every morning and go somewhere, and in a small apartment there is no somewhere.

Cabinet beds solve this structurally. The mattress tri-folds out on a sliding platform and it can be left made up — so the sheets fold with it and nothing is stripped. Wall beds can be bought with bedding straps that hold the covers against the mattress, and they work reasonably well. But that is an accessory and a habit, not a specification, and it is not what the storage in “Murphy bed with storage” usually refers to.

What each unit actually stores

The Orion is the only genuine wall bed on this page, and its storage is shelving rather than bedding storage. Read the ratings before you plan around them: 25 lb per shelf is a row of paperbacks and a lamp, not a book collection, and the 50 lb desk is a laptop and a monitor rather than a workstation. Bestar publishes both figures, which is more than most do.

The Costway is the outlier and worth knowing about for one specific case. It is a cot-size folding bed inside a cabinet on four castors — 34 by 17.5 by 41.5 inches folded, 485 lb rated, with storage in the cabinet body. It touches no wall, anchors to nothing, and you can push it into a corner with one hand. Calling it a Murphy bed flatters it, and if the lease forbids any drilling at all it is the only thing in the category that qualifies.

What the storage costs you in floor

Storage is depth, and depth is the whole reason a wall bed exists. This is the trade the category does not advertise.

A plain queen wall bed is 23.5 inches deep closed. The two cabinet beds are 25 and 26.4 inches — one and a half to three inches more, for a drawer and a credenza body you can put a lamp on. That is a good trade in almost every room.

The Orion is the other direction entirely: 97 inches wide overall, because the storage cabinet and the fold-out desk sit alongside the bed rather than behind it. You are buying a wall, not a bed. It needs 90.4 inches of ceiling and extends 92.7 inches from the wall, and the desk has to be retracted first because the bed lands on the same floor.

Which of these a renter can actually install

This is where the ranking diverges from what the category usually recommends. A dual-mount wall bed anchors into the wall structure and the floor — that is why it is stable, and it is also why most leases make it a conversation with the landlord.

Both cabinet beds are freestanding. The Arason explicitly needs no bolting to floor or wall. The Night & Day Cube anchors to nothing. The Costway rolls on castors. The Orion anchors to the wall and is not a renter’s purchase.

The real constraint on a freestanding cabinet bed is weight, not fixings: 250 lb for the Arason and 170 lb for the Cube, and neither comes apart again once assembled. Getting one into a third-floor walk-up is the whole problem with this category. What we would buy

If the question is where the bedding goes: the Arason Creden-ZzZ. An 11-inch drawer, a mattress included, 500 lb supported, freestanding and 25 inches deep closed. The honest caveat is that the included mattress is 53 by 75 inches — nearer a full than the queen the name implies, and queen sheets will swim on it.

If you want a true queen sleeping surface and still cannot drill: the Night & Day Murphy Cube. 26.4 inches deep closed, about ten square feet of floor, 80.3 inches long open, and a genuine queen surface per the manufacturer. 170 lb assembled.
