What memory foam means on a sofa listing, and what it does not

On a mattress, memory foam is a measurable thing: so many inches of viscoelastic foam at a stated density over so many inches of support base. On a convertible sofa it is frequently an upholstery note about the seat cushion — a different piece of foam from the one you sleep on — and almost nobody states a depth at all.

Read the registry and the gap is obvious. Of the eleven convertibles we cover, exactly one publishes its mattress depth: the Vintage Tufted II at 7.5 inches, and that is not described as memory foam. Every other sofa in this format says “foam over a wood frame” or similar, with no depth stated separately. The Tallulah is the one that at least names its layers.

The bottom three rows are the only entries on that table with a stated depth and a stated foam type. That is not an accident of our research — it is what the mattress industry publishes and the sofa industry does not.

The replacement mattress: the biggest change for the least money

Two cautions, both from the listing rather than from us. The first is the size name: a “queen” sofa-bed mattress is 58 by 72 inches, not the 60 by 80 that queen means on a bed, so your queen sheets will not fit it and nor will a standard queen protector. The second is that 4.5 inches of foam will soften a hard pull-out and will not erase a crossbar. If you can feel a steel bar through the current mattress, the bar is still going to be there — it will just be under more foam. The models that have no bar to begin with are in sleeper sofas without bars.

Toppers, and the two-inch rule nobody tells you

A topper is the cheapest route and it comes with one hard constraint: depth decides whether it can stay in the sofa. Two inches folds into a sofa-bed cavity along with the mattress. Three inches does not.
