Sleeper Sofas / Roundup

The Best Sleeper Sofas for a Tall Person

A standard twin mattress is 75 inches long. Most convertible sofas open to less than that, and almost none of them say so in the headline.

How we picked

Ranked purely on usable sleeping length, because for this buyer nothing else decides it and every other quality is a tie-breaker. We list the open length of every convertible we cover rather than only the winners, so a reader can check their own shortlist against the same figure. A wall bed and a full-size futon mattress are included because on this one specification they beat every convertible sofa, and leaving them out would make the page less useful than it ought to be.

Dual-mount means it anchors to both the floor and the wall. That is why it is stable, and it is also why most leases make it a conversation with the landlord.

The pick is the Novogratz Vintage Tufted Sofa Sleeper II, which opens to 81.5 by 44 inches. That is the only convertible sofa in our registry that gives an adult over six feet tall somewhere to put their feet, and it is the right buy when the room needs a sofa and the sofa has to sleep a tall guest.

If the room can take a wall bed instead, buy one: a Bestar queen Murphy bed sleeps on a true 60 by 80 inch queen mattress, which is 80 inches of length against the 66 to 73 that most convertibles manage. For a tall sleeper that difference is the whole decision.

This page exists because length is the specification this category hides. Listings lead with the closed width, describe the bed as a “full” or a “queen,” and then publish an open figure that is shorter than a twin. A standard twin is 38 by 75 inches. A standard full is 54 by 75. Hold every number below against that 75.

Every open length we could find, longest first

Usable sleeping length, taken from the open footprint

Novogratz Vintage Tufted Sofa Sleeper II
81.5 × 44 in.
Bestar queen wall beds (Cielo, Versatile, Pur, Orion)
80 in. — a true 60 × 80 queen
DHP 8 in. coil futon mattress on a full frame
75 × 54 in. — standard full
Novogratz Tallulah
73 × 44 in.
DHP Emily
71 × 43.5 in.
Novogratz Brittany
70.5 × 43.5 in.
Serta Active convertible with storage
70 in. of bed length stated
Serta Rane / Serta Chelsea
66.1 × 37.6 in.
Standard twin mattress, for comparison
38 × 75 in.

Four of the seven convertibles there are shorter than a twin mattress. The Serta pair at 66.1 inches is nearly nine inches short of a twin, which its own listing calls a “full short twin” — an honest phrase for a short bed.

Novogratz is explicit about the consequence on the Brittany: at 70.5 inches, anyone over about 5 ft 10 in sleeps with their feet off the end. Use that as your calibration point. Subtract roughly five inches from any stated length for a pillow and you have the height of person each one actually suits.

Do the arithmetic on your own height first

Two minutes with a tape measure saves a return. Lie on the floor on your back, put a book against the top of your head and another against your heels, and measure between them. Then add four to five inches for a pillow, because a pillow takes length out of the bed.

Height against the length you need

5 ft 8 in. (68 in.)
About 73 in. of bed — the Tallulah works
5 ft 10 in. (70 in.)
About 75 in. — a full futon mattress, not a convertible
6 ft 0 in. (72 in.)
About 77 in. — the Vintage Tufted II, or a wall bed
6 ft 2 in. (74 in.)
About 79 in. — a wall bed on a true queen
6 ft 4 in. (76 in.)
About 81 in. — a queen at 80 in. is already tight

Twin XL is not available here

A twin XL is 38 by 80 inches and it is the obvious answer for a tall single sleeper — but no convertible sofa is made in that size, and no daybed frame cut for a 75-inch mattress will take one. In this category the 80-inch sleeping surfaces are all queens.

Convertibles are generous on width and mean on length

It is worth understanding why, because it tells you which models to look at. A split-back sofa bed is as wide as the sofa and as deep as the seat plus the folded-down back. The sofa’s width becomes the bed’s length, and the seat-plus-back depth becomes the bed’s width.

So these beds come out short and wide. The Brittany is 43.5 inches wide against a twin’s 38 — five and a half inches more shoulder room — and 4.5 inches shorter than a twin. The Tallulah and the Vintage Tufted II are both 44 inches wide. If you are tall and sleeping alone, that extra width buys you nothing; you need the number the format is worst at.

Which is also why the Vintage Tufted II is the exception. It is an 81.5-inch-wide sofa whose sleep surface stays the full 81.5 inches when it opens, rather than narrowing the way the Brittany does from 81.5 closed to 70.5 open. Check that pairing on any model you are considering: closed width and open length should be close, and when they are not, the sofa is losing length to its arms.

The futon-frame route: buy length as a mattress

A futon frame takes a drop-in mattress in a standard size, which means the length becomes a mattress specification rather than a sofa specification — and mattresses come in honest sizes.

A full futon mattress is 75 by 54 inches. The 8-inch version with 15-gauge independently encased pocket coils is a genuine mattress that bi-folds, and at 75 inches it beats every convertible on this page except the Vintage Tufted II. The catch is 59 lb of mattress on a frame that has to fold, which is stiff for the first dozen folds.

A Japanese floor futon goes further: 80 inches long in every width, rolled away in the morning, no frame at all. If the room is a study or a spare room rather than a living room, that is the cheapest 80 inches of sleeping length available — see the best Japanese floor futons.

The verdict

Up to about 5 ft 8 in: any of the 71-to-73-inch split-backs is fine, and you should choose on footprint and mattress instead. Start at the best sleeper sofas for small spaces.

5 ft 10 in to 6 ft 2 in: the Vintage Tufted II at 81.5 inches, or a futon frame with a 75-inch full mattress. Nothing else in the convertible category clears it.

Over 6 ft 2 in, or sleeping there regularly: a wall bed on a real queen. Eighty inches of mattress, 8 to 12 inches deep, 1,000 lb rated — and 23.5 inches of closed depth, which is less floor than any sofa on this page. Read the best Murphy beds for small apartments and then Murphy bed vs sleeper sofa for the trade-offs.

Whatever you buy, measure the room before you order it. The open depth is the number people get wrong, and the method is in how to measure for a sleeper sofa.

Answers

Common questions

How long is a sleeper sofa bed?
Among the models we cover, 66 to 81.5 inches. The Serta Rane and Chelsea open to 66.1 inches, the Novogratz Brittany to 70.5, the DHP Emily to 71, the Tallulah to 73 and the Vintage Tufted II to 81.5. A standard twin mattress is 75 inches long, so most of the category is shorter than a twin.
What is the best sofa bed for a tall person?
Of the convertible sofas we cover, the Novogratz Vintage Tufted Sofa Sleeper II, which opens to 81.5 by 44 inches and publishes a 7.5-inch mattress. If a wall bed is possible in the room, a queen Murphy bed on a true 60 by 80 inch mattress is the better answer for anyone over about 6 ft 2 in.
Can a 6-foot person sleep on a sofa bed?
On most of them, not comfortably. Six feet is 72 inches and a pillow takes four or five more, so you need about 77 inches of bed. Only the Vintage Tufted II at 81.5 inches clears that among the convertibles here; a full futon mattress at 75 inches is marginal, and a queen wall bed at 80 inches is comfortable.
Are sofa beds wider than a twin mattress?
Usually yes, and that is the consolation prize. A twin is 38 inches wide; the Brittany opens to 43.5 and the Tallulah and Vintage Tufted II to 44. Split-back geometry turns the sofa's width into the bed's length and the seat depth into the bed's width, which produces a short, wide bed.
Is there a twin XL sofa bed?
Not that we have found. Twin XL is 38 by 80 inches, which would solve this problem neatly, but convertible sofas are not built to that size and daybed frames cut for a 75-inch mattress will not take one. In this category the 80-inch sleeping surfaces are all queens on wall beds.
