The Best Futons for Side Sleepers

Sleep on your back and a thin futon is firm. Sleep on your side and a thin futon is a floor with a cover on it, because your hip and shoulder have nowhere to go.

How we picked

Ranked on published mattress depth and construction, in that order, because side sleeping is a geometry problem before it is a comfort preference — a hip needs vertical room to displace into and no amount of surface softness creates that room. Pocket coils rank above solid foam at equal depth because coils compress locally under a hip and foam compresses across a whole region. Nothing here has been physically tested; every figure is read off the manufacturer's live listing on the date in each spec block.

Three inches of single-block high-density gel memory foam, over 3 lb per cubic foot, with a strapped bamboo-rayon cover that does not slide off.

What it's bad at

At 3 inches it will not fold into a sofa-bed cavity, so it has to come off and be stored between guests. The queen is also cut 60 by 80 inches, which overhangs a 58 by 72 inch sofa-bed queen at every edge.

The pick is the DHP 8 Inch Independently Encased Coil Futon Mattress: eight inches deep on 15-gauge pocket coils, 75 by 54 inches, and it drops into any standard full futon frame. Of everything we cover that goes on a futon frame, it is the only one that publishes both enough depth and a construction that compresses locally rather than as a slab — which is exactly what a hip needs.

The reason side sleeping deserves its own page is that it changes which specification matters. A back sleeper spreads their weight over the whole torso, so a firm four-inch pad is merely hard. A side sleeper puts most of their weight through two points, hip and shoulder, and those two points have to sink for the spine to stay straight. Four inches of foam cannot let a hip sink four inches. The depth number is not a comfort preference here, it is the whole mechanism.

Why depth beats softness for a side sleeper

Lie on your side on a hard floor and your hip bone takes the load through perhaps two square inches of flesh. Your shoulder takes another concentrated load. Your waist, meanwhile, is bridging a gap — unsupported, so the lumbar spine bends sideways to reach the floor.

A mattress fixes that in one way only: by letting the hip and shoulder descend far enough that the waist comes into contact. That descent is limited by the total depth of material available. A soft four-inch mattress bottoms out and you are on the floor again with a cushion in the way; a firmer eight-inch mattress lets the hip travel two or three inches and still has material left underneath it.

Which is why “soft” is a misleading word to shop on, and depth is not. A three-inch soft topper over a four-inch pad is still seven inches of material and will beat a five-inch mattress described as plush.

Published depth, across everything we cover that can go under a side sleeper

DHP 8 in. coil futon mattress
8 in. — 15-gauge independently encased pocket coils
Zinus 8 in. Green Tea
8 in. — 2 in. memory foam + 2 in. comfort + 4 in. base
MAXYOYO floor futon
4 in. standard; also sold in 4.5, 6 and 8 in.
Milliard 6 in. tri-fold
6 in. — 1.5 in. of 3 lb memory foam over a 4.5 in. base
Linenspa 6 in. innerspring
6 in. — heavy-gauge coils under a quilted cover
ViscoSoft 3 in. topper
3 in. — single-block high-density gel memory foam
Linenspa 2 in. topper
2 in. — gel-bead-infused memory foam
Novogratz Tallulah (as a sofa)
17.5 in. open sleep height; foam depth not stated

Two rows on that table clear eight inches. Everything else is a component rather than an answer — useful stacked on something, insufficient alone.

Pocket coils versus foam, at the same depth

At eight inches we cover one of each: the DHP coil futon mattress and the Zinus Green Tea foam mattress. For a side sleeper they are not equivalent, and the difference is local compression.

Independently encased coils mean each spring is in its own fabric pocket and compresses largely on its own. Put a hip on it and a small cluster of coils goes down while the ones under your waist stay up. That is the behavior a side sleeper wants: a dished surface rather than a flat one.

A foam slab compresses across a region instead. Memory foam does this better than ordinary polyurethane because it is viscoelastic and creeps to shape, but it still pulls neighboring material down with it. In practice the Zinus is the better buy if the frame does not fold — a daybed, a trundle, a wall bed — and the DHP is the better buy if the frame has to bi-fold, because the Zinus does not fold at all.

The honest catch on the DHP

Fifty-nine pounds of mattress on a frame that has to fold. It is stiff to bi-fold the first dozen times and a light frame will feel the weight. If your futon frame is thin tube steel, check what it is rated to carry before you put eight inches of pocket coil on it.

The floor futon problem, stated plainly

A Japanese floor futon is the best-storing guest bed there is — the MAXYOYO is 10 to 14.5 lb depending on size and rolls away to nothing. It is also, in its standard four-inch form, the worst surface on this page for a side sleeper, and we would rather say so than sell it to you.

Four inches on a hard floor is four inches. The manufacturer’s own framing is that side sleepers and anyone much over 200 lb will feel the floor through it, and that is correct. On a carpeted floor it is better than on tile or laminate, but not by enough to change the answer.

The way to make it work is to buy up the range rather than buy a topper. MAXYOYO sells the same mattress in 4.5, 6 and 8 inch versions. An 8-inch floor futon is a genuinely different product from a 4-inch one for this purpose, and it still rolls away — which is the only reason to be in this format at all. Full coverage of the category is in the best Japanese floor futons.

The other route, if the four-inch futon is already bought, is three inches of high-density foam on top of it. The ViscoSoft topper is a single block over 3 lb per cubic foot with a strapped cover, which matters on a floor setup because a loose topper on a floor futon walks across the room overnight.

The frame matters too, and most frames cap you at eight inches

Before you buy depth, check what your frame accepts. This is a constraint buyers routinely discover after the mattress arrives.

Daybed frames are the strictest: the Novogratz Bushwick publishes a hard 8-inch maximum mattress depth, and the Dream Solutions pop-up trundle the same. On a trundle that has to rise level with the daybed, exceeding the stated maximum does not just look wrong — the two surfaces stop meeting.

Wall beds are the most generous: Bestar’s queen models take 8 to 12 inches at 60 to 90 lb, and a Lori takes up to 12 inches at 80 lb maximum. If you are a side sleeper and the room can take a wall bed, that is the configuration where you get a real mattress with no depth compromise at all — see the best Murphy bed mattresses.

And if the piece has to be a sofa, the relevant figure is open sleep height rather than mattress depth, because a split-back has no separate mattress. The Tallulah’s 17.5 inches is the highest in our registry and its memory-over-high-density construction is the closest this format gets, which is why it is here despite publishing no foam depth. The wider comparison is in the best sleeper sofas for back pain, which shares most of the same physics.

Answers

Common questions

How thick should a futon mattress be for a side sleeper?
Eight inches if the frame will take it. Side sleeping loads the hip and shoulder as two concentrated points that have to descend for the spine to stay straight, and the available descent is limited by total material depth. Six inches is marginal for an adult, and four inches - the standard Japanese floor futon depth - is not enough on a hard floor.
Are pocket coils better than foam for side sleeping?
At the same depth, usually yes. Independently encased coils compress in small local clusters, so the coils under a hip go down while the ones under the waist stay up, which dishes the surface. A foam slab pulls neighboring material down with it and stays flatter. The practical exception is a frame that has to fold - the DHP coil mattress bi-folds and the Zinus 8-inch foam mattress does not fold at all.
Can a side sleeper use a Japanese floor futon?
Not the standard four-inch version on a hard floor - the manufacturer's own guidance is that side sleepers will feel the floor through it. MAXYOYO sells the same mattress in 4.5, 6 and 8 inch depths, and the 8-inch version is a genuinely different product for this purpose while still rolling away to nothing.
Will a mattress topper fix a futon for side sleeping?
It helps, because total depth is what matters and a topper adds depth. Three inches of high-density foam over a four-inch pad is seven inches of material, which beats a five-inch mattress described as plush. Use a topper with a strapped or non-slip cover - a loose topper on a floor futon moves across the room overnight.
What is the maximum mattress thickness a futon or daybed frame will take?
Check the specific frame, because several publish a hard ceiling. The Novogratz Bushwick daybed states a maximum of 8 inches, as does the Dream Solutions pop-up trundle, and on a pop-up trundle exceeding it means the two sleeping surfaces no longer level with each other. Wall beds are more generous: Bestar's queen models take 8 to 12 inches.
