The bar people feel through a pull-out sofa bed is a structural member of the folding steel frame, usually under the hip or the small of the back depending on how the frame folds. It is not a manufacturing fault, it will not soften with use, and the frame cannot be built without it.

Which makes the solution simple and slightly counterintuitive: do not buy a sofa with a folding frame. A split-back convertible has no separate bed frame at all — the back folds down into line with the seat, and the sofa’s own wood frame carries the sleeper. There is nothing under you to feel.

Why a split-back has no bar

A pull-out is two structures: a sofa, and a folding bed inside it. The bed has to be rigid enough to span the frame unsupported, which is what the crossbar does, and it has to carry a mattress thin enough to fold into the cavity — two to three inches, typically. The honest trade: you swap a bar for a seam
