How to Make a Murphy Bed More Comfortable

1. Pick the mattress inside the window, not at its edge

The reason to aim at the middle rather than the top is bedding. A heavy comforter on a mattress already near 90 pounds puts the mechanism outside its balance range, and that shows up as a bed that wants to fall rather than descend.

2. A topper counts against your depth, so mostly do not

This is the counterintuitive one. A three-inch topper on an eleven-inch mattress is a fourteen-inch mattress, and fourteen inches does not fit a twelve-inch cabinet cavity.

So the usual comfort lever is not available. If you want more comfort, buy a better mattress inside the limit rather than adding to a mattress at the limit. That is a real constraint and it is worth knowing before you order a nine-inch hybrid intending to top it.

Where a topper does work: on an eight-inch mattress in a twelve-inch cavity, you have four inches of headroom. Keep the total inside twelve and keep the total weight inside the window.

3. Bedding: pocket depth, and why bunching matters

A wall bed holds the bedding on the mattress with straps while the bed is vertical, which is the single best practical feature of the format — nothing is stripped or remade.

The failure mode is bunching. A deep-pocket fitted sheet on an eight-inch mattress has three inches of slack, and that slack gathers at the strap line. A bed that is hard to close is almost always a bedding problem rather than a mechanism problem, and forcing it is how hinges get bent.

Use a fitted sheet whose pocket depth matches the mattress, and a lighter duvet than you would use on a fixed bed. Skip the heavy quilted mattress protector, which adds both bulk and weight.

4. The three things owners actually complain about

Nowhere to put a glass. A wall bed comes down into the middle of a room, so there is no bedside table. The configurations with integrated nightstands solve it; otherwise a small stool that lives in the cabinet and comes out with the bed is the answer.

Nowhere to plug in a phone. Same cause. The Bestar Orion configuration has USB ports and outlets built into its cabinet, which is genuinely useful; otherwise plan a socket on the wall the bed lands beside rather than behind.

The clearing ritual. Every night something has to move out of the landing zone. Bestar recommends 30 to 36 inches of clear movement space around the open bed, and if that space is where the coffee table lives, the bed will stop being used. Put the coffee table on castors.

5. Two minutes of maintenance a year

Check the wall and floor fixings annually with a screwdriver. Anything that swings works its fasteners loose, and on a bed rated to 1,000 pounds including the mattress that is the check worth doing.

On a spring-balance mechanism, if the bed starts slamming or lifting hard, the springs need re-tensioning to the mattress — that is an adjustment, not a fault. On a piston system, a bed that has become heavy to lift usually means a piston has lost pressure, and pistons are replaceable parts.
