The three things worth buying in this band

A tri-fold mattress. 75 by 31 inches flat, folds to about 31 by 25 by 18 inches, 1.5 inches of memory foam over a 4.5-inch base, washable cover with a non-slip bottom. It stands in a wardrobe and it is the most likely thing on this page to be used.

A roll-up floor futon. Real mattress sizes — twin 39 by 80 inches at 10 pounds — four inches thick, quilted microfiber cotton over high-density foam. Better sleeping dimensions than any convertible sofa on this site, at a fraction of the cost.

A six-inch mattress for a trundle they are not using. A surprising number of people own a trundle daybed with an empty trundle, because nobody told them a trundle needs its own mattress and that it has to be six inches or less.

The gift nobody buys: bedding that actually fits

This is the genuinely under-bought item in the whole category, and it is worth explaining why.

Almost every guest bed in a small apartment is an odd size. A convertible sofa opens to things like 70.5 by 43.5 inches, and nothing is made for that. A sofa-bed queen is 58 by 72 inches with no mattress protector available in general retail. A cot tri-fold is 31 inches wide.

So the practical gift is a good flat sheet set and a decent pillow, which work on any of those, plus a flat waterproof pad if the surface needs protecting. It is unglamorous and it is what the arrangement is actually missing.

What to avoid at this budget

A thin mattress topper. Under three inches you are buying a texture change rather than support, and on a convertible sofa’s structural fold seam even a good topper does not help much. This is the most commonly given gift in this category and the least effective.

A mattress protector for a sofa bed. No standard size exists at 58 by 72 inches, and a queen protector bunches enough to be felt.

An air mattress. Fine for two nights a year and genuinely poor for repeated use — seams and pumps fail, and a slow leak puts a guest on the floor. We do not rank them because we have not researched them to the standard we hold the rest of this site to.

For a student going into a dorm

Different constraints and the same answer, more strongly. A dorm room is roughly 130 square feet shared by two people, and doorways run 30 to 32 inches. Anything that arrives compressed and folds away is correct; anything that requires assembly and a doorway measurement is not.

A tri-fold or a floor futon also goes home in a car in May, which the dumpsters outside every dorm in the country suggest is not true of the alternatives.
