Every other sleeper sofa page on this site is a negotiation between two jobs. A guest room ends the negotiation: the sofa is a bed that happens to look like a sofa, and the sofa half is a costume nobody is wearing.

So buy for the night. The figures that matter are the length of the open surface, what is under the sleeper, and whether any bedding on earth fits it.

Length first — most of these are too short for an adult

This is the specification that decides whether a guest sleeps well, and it is the one people never check.

Anyone over about 5 ft 10 in has their feet over the edge of a 70-inch surface. The Vintage Tufted II keeps the full 81.5 inches when it opens, which is the longest in the convertible category, and for a guest room that is worth more than anything else on the spec sheet.

Then what is under the sleeper

Two of these publish something useful. The Vintage Tufted II states a 7.5-inch mattress thickness — the only convertible in our registry that publishes a mattress depth at all. The Tallulah specifies memory foam over high-density foam.

Everything else in the category says “foam.” That is not a reason to avoid them, and it is a reason to prefer the ones that tell you more.

All the split-backs here still have a fold seam where the seat meets the back, and no topper removes it — it is a structural join. If a guest is staying a week rather than a weekend, read can you sleep on a sleeper sofa every night before you commit.

The bedding problem, and the one thing that solves it

No fitted sheet is made for 81.5 by 44 inches, or 73 by 44, or any of these sizes. This is not a gap in the market you can shop your way out of — the sizes simply do not exist.

What works in practice is a flat sheet tucked in, or a duvet folded in half doing both layers. A fitted full sheet on a 44-inch-wide surface pulls at the corners and comes off at three in the morning, which is exactly the sort of thing a guest does not mention and does remember.

And buy a decent pillow. Sofa beds sit low — 15.5 to 17.5 inches — so a thin pillow leaves the neck unsupported. It does more for a guest’s night than any topper.

The alternative worth considering

In a guest room specifically, a daybed beats every sofa here: a conventional non-folding twin mattress, ordinary twin sheets that actually fit, no seam, no mechanism, and it is already made up when someone arrives late. The only thing it cannot do is look like a sofa — which in a guest room nobody needs it to.

If the guest room is also an office

Then the floor is the constraint, not the mattress. A convertible open at 43 to 44 inches plus a 30-inch walkway is about six feet from the wall, and a desk chair needs roughly three feet behind the desk. In a ten-foot room those do not both fit on the same axis.

Two ways out: put the desk on the adjacent wall, or use a wall bed with a fold-out desk, which puts both functions on the same floor and makes them take turns.
