Sleeper Sofa Alternatives for Small Spaces

1. A cabinet bed — the best all-round alternative

A credenza about 25 to 26 inches deep with a tri-fold mattress inside it. Less permanent floor than a sofa bed, a real mattress at a real bed height, and nothing anchored to the building.

A Night & Day Cube is 64.1 by 26.4 by 36.6 inches closed — about ten square feet — and opens to 80.3 inches deep. An Arason Creden-ZzZ is 64 by 25 by 39 inches, opens to 81 inches, supports 500 pounds, and includes its mattress plus an 11-inch drawer.

The catch: 170 to 250 pounds assembled, does not come apart, and provides no seating at all. Cabinet beds.

2. A daybed — the best sleeping surface for the money

A conventional twin mattress on a frame with a back and two sides. No fold seam, no crossbar, no mechanism. The Novogratz Bushwick publishes both capacities (400 pounds daybed, 250 trundle) and an 8-inch maximum mattress depth, which is unusually complete for the category.

The catch: 41 inches of permanent depth against a sofa bed’s 34, and it looks like a bed. With a firm full-length bolster it becomes sittable. Daybeds.

3. A wall bed — the smallest permanent footprint of anything

23 to 23.5 inches deep closed, which is eleven inches less than a convertible sofa, and it takes your own conventional 8-to-12-inch mattress. A Bestar Cielo extends 93.1 inches when down and needs 88.9 inches of ceiling.

The catch: the ceiling, the price, and a dual-mount installation into wall and floor that most leases prohibit. A stud-anchored panel bed is the lighter version. Wall beds.

4. A futon frame with a real mattress

The alternative most people do not consider, because it looks like a futon frame. A bi-fold frame takes an eight-inch mattress with independently encased pocket coils: the mattress is continuous, so there is no fold seam, and there is no separate bed deck, so there is no crossbar.

It is the most comfortable thing in this price range. That is not a marginal claim — it is what you get when you remove both of the structural problems that make sofa beds uncomfortable.

The catch: aesthetics, and 59 pounds of mattress on a frame that folds. Futon mattresses.

5. A closet-stored mattress — zero permanent footprint

A tri-fold folds to about 31 by 25 by 18 inches and stands in a wardrobe. A roll-up floor futon is 10 to 14.5 pounds and comes in real mattress sizes.

This is the only option with no footprint whatsoever when stored, no doorway problem, no ceiling requirement, and no assembly. For a room that failed every other measurement, it fails none.

The catch: four to six inches on a hard floor, and getting up off it — which rules it out for an older guest. Floor futons.

6. An air mattress, honestly assessed

We do not cover air mattresses on this site, and it would be dishonest not to mention them on a page about alternatives. For two nights a year, an air mattress is the correct answer and everything above is over-buying.

What they are bad at is repeated use: the seams fail, the pump fails, and a slow leak means a guest wakes up on the floor. If someone stays more than a handful of nights a year, one of the five options above is genuinely better value over any reasonable timeframe.
