Daybeds / Roundup

The Best Daybeds for a Home Office

A sofa bed in an office takes nine extra inches of floor the moment a guest arrives. A daybed takes none, because there is nothing to open.

How we picked

Ranked for the specific constraint of a working room: first on whether the frame adds any depth at night (a frame with drawers adds none, a trundle frame adds a mattress width), then on storage, then on height — because in an office the piece has to work as seating during the day. Trundle frames are ranked last here rather than excluded, because some offices do need to sleep two. Nothing here has been physically tested.

Bellemave Twin Daybed with Storage Drawers

Bellemave

A minimal bedroom with a low daybed and cushions arranged against the wallIllustrative — category photo, not this unit

An upholstered twin daybed with drawers built into the base, rated 400 lb, with a channel-tufted headboard that reads as furniture rather than as a bed frame.

What it's bad at

Pine and MDF rather than solid hardwood, and the drawers take the space a trundle would — so this stores bedding but it does not sleep a second guest.

Solid plantation hardwood with a headboard and footboard, 400 lb, and about ten inches of clear space underneath for boxes rather than a trundle.

What it's bad at

The pick is the Bellemave twin daybed with storage drawers: 79.9 by 41.3 inches, 31.9 inches tall, 400 lb, with drawers in the base and nothing whatsoever to open. In a room that already contains a desk and a chair, a guest bed that adds zero inches of depth at night is worth more than one with a better mattress.

That is the whole case for a daybed in an office, and it is a strong one. A convertible sofa gains 9 to 10.5 inches of depth when it opens, and in an office those inches come out of your desk chair’s travel. A daybed is already a bed. You put a fitted sheet on it and the room is done.

The office advantage: nothing gained at night

Lay the three formats side by side on the one measurement an office cares about — how much more floor the piece needs when somebody is sleeping on it — and the daybed wins outright.

Depth added when the guest arrives

Bellemave daybed with drawers
None — nothing unfolds; drawers open frontward
JULYFOX wood daybed
None — fixed frame, no trundle
DHP Kayden wood daybed
None — fixed frame, no trundle
Novogratz Bushwick with trundle
40.5 in. of trundle beside the frame's 41 in.
Serta Rane convertible sofa
4.5 in. (33.1 in. → 37.6 in.)
DHP Emily futon
9.5 in. (34 in. → 43.5 in.)
Novogratz Tallulah futon
10.5 in. (33.5 in. → 44 in.)
Bestar Cielo wall bed
69.6 in. (23.5 in. → 93.1 in. extension)

The catch is in the first column rather than the second: a daybed occupies 41 inches of depthall the time, where a Serta Rane occupies 33.1. So a daybed is worse than a sofa for a room that is tight every day and better for a room that is tight only when guests come. Most home offices are the second kind.

Note the Bushwick row. A roll-out trundle needs 40.5 inches of clear floor beside the frame before the second bed exists — about 81.5 inches of depth with both beds in use. In a room with a desk, that is almost certainly the desk’s floor. If the office has to sleep two, measure that before you buy the trundle version.

Storage, because an office has nowhere to put a duvet

An office has a filing drawer and a bookshelf. Neither holds a duvet, two pillows and a set of sheets, and this is the problem every guest-bed format runs into in a working room.

The Bellemave answers it directly: drawers built into the base of the frame. The bedding lives in the furniture it belongs to, comes out when a guest arrives, and goes away again — which also means the daybed reads as seating rather than as a made bed for the 355 days nobody is staying.

The JULYFOX is the cheaper version of the same idea: solid plantation hardwood with about ten inches of clear space beneath the frame. That space takes boxes and bags, and its honest limitation is that it is open shelf rather than drawers, so whatever you store there is on show. In an office with a client video call in it, that matters.

The storage-versus-trundle trade runs through the whole category and is unpicked in the best daybeds with storage. The short version for an office: drawers, unless the room genuinely has to sleep two people.

It has to work as seating, because you will look at it all day

In a spare bedroom a daybed can look like a bed. In an office it is in your eyeline for eight hours, and the frames that read as furniture are a different shortlist from the frames that sleep best.

Frame height is the giveaway. The Bellemave is 31.9 inches tall, which is between a Serta Rane sofa at 29.5 and a DHP Emily at 33 — sofa height by any measure, with a channel-tufted upholstered headboard you can lean against during a long call. The DHP Kayden is 34 inches in wood, seven inches lower than the usual tube-steel daybed. The Bushwick is 40 inches and looks like what it is.

Then add bolsters. A twin mattress is 38 inches of seat depth and nobody sits on 38 inches; firm bolsters stood along the back wall cut it to roughly 20 inches of usable seat, which is sofa geometry. The full treatment of this is in the best daybeds that look like a couch.

Where the Kayden stops being the answer

The DHP Kayden publishes 225 lb and the JULYFOX 400 lb. Both are one-person light-duty frames, and the Kayden's low back gives you very little to lean on despite looking the part. If anybody heavy is going to sit or sleep on this, the Bellemave's 400 lb and the Bushwick's 400 lb are the figures to work from.

Or stop using the floor and use the wall

Worth naming the alternative properly, because for some offices it is the better answer. A wall bed with a fold-out desk puts the office and the guest bed on the same wall instead of making them compete for the same floor — the Bestar Orion is a queen bed and a pneumatic desk in 97 inches of wall, and the desk retracts rather than needing to be cleared.

The arithmetic is straightforward. A daybed hands you a permanent 41 inches of depth and no surprises. A wall bed hands you 23.5 inches of depth closed and then needs 93.1 inches plus a walkway when it is open, which in a 10-by-10 office is the whole room for one night. Which is better depends entirely on how often the room has to be both things at once.

Those configurations are in the best Murphy bed desk combos, the sofa-shaped answer to the same room is in the best sleeper sofas for a home office, and the format-by-format decision is in which guest bed fits your room.

Answers

Common questions

Is a daybed or a sofa bed better for a home office?
A daybed, if the room is only tight when guests come. A daybed adds no depth at night because there is nothing to open, where a convertible sofa gains 4.5 to 10.5 inches the moment the back folds down - and in an office those inches come out of the desk chair's travel. A sofa is better if the room is tight every day, because it is 33 to 35 inches deep against a daybed's 41.
What size daybed fits in a home office?
A twin frame, which runs 77 to 79.9 inches long by 41.3 to 42.25 inches deep. Measure the wall it will sit against and the clear floor in front of your desk separately: the daybed occupies its 41 inches permanently, so the question is whether the desk chair still has 30 to 36 inches to roll back into.
Where do you store bedding for an office daybed?
In the frame. The Bellemave has drawers built into the base, which is the cleanest answer because the duvet lives in the furniture it belongs to and the daybed reads as seating the rest of the time. The JULYFOX is the budget version with about ten inches of open clearance underneath, with the caveat that open shelf means whatever you store is on show.
Can a daybed in an office sleep two people?
Only with a trundle, and you need the floor for it. A Novogratz Bushwick trundle is 40.5 inches wide and has to roll out beside the frame's 41 inches - about 81.5 inches of depth with both beds in use, which in a room with a desk is usually the desk's floor. Measure it before buying the trundle version.
How do you make an office daybed look like a sofa?
Pick a frame under about 35 inches tall and add bolsters. The Bellemave is 31.9 inches and the DHP Kayden 34, against 39.5 to 42.68 inches for a typical tube-steel daybed. Then stand firm bolsters along the back wall to cut the 38-inch mattress depth down to roughly 20 inches of usable seat, and keep the bedding in the drawers during the day.
